Twelve Apostles Ridge at Säuling
The Säuling has fascinated people for centuries. Numerous legends surround the distinctive mountain, and King Ludwig II. built his fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein on one of its northern foothills. Today the summit is a popular excursion destination, and hiking trails lead up from the north and south sides. Far less visited is the jagged Twelve Apostles Ridge, which runs west from the summit and forms the border between Germany and Austria. Those who hike it from Pilgerschrofen in the west can not only refresh their knowledge of the Twelve Apostles thanks to the name signs attached to the ridges but also enjoy varied ridge climbing. The route includes some downclimbing spots, and some climbing sections of grade III+ or even IV, otherwise the ridge is mostly easy to follow. Those lucky might even encounter ibex along the way.
