In the shadow of the magnificent yet forbidding north faces of the Northern Karwendel range, a popular circular hike can be found via the Tor saddle. From Hinterriß, easy paths lead up from both Ron valley and Tor valley to the scenic meadow saddle, offering particularly magnificent views of the nearby rock giants around the Eastern Karwendel peak. Few know that a demanding trail continues from there to the somewhat hidden and usually very lonely Torkopf. While under good conditions the difficulties of the trail are manageable for experienced, surefooted, and fearless summit aspirants, the summit detour must be avoided for safety reasons during bad weather or any kind of moisture or slippery conditions!
The challenges of the summit trail are worth the effort, as the view from the Torkopf is quite extensive. The vistas include the Soier group, the peaks of the Vorderkarwendel around Schafreiter, the Falken group, and of course repeatedly the all-dominating north faces of the Northern Karwendel range.

Safety information
The paths to the Tor saddle through Ron valley and Tor valley are easy to walk without special technical difficulties.
However, the path from the saddle to the Torkopf is recommended only for experienced hikers: the quite tricky and dangerous fall terrain requires absolute surefootedness and a head for heights, and additionally a climbing section (difficulty UIAA approx. I+) must be overcome.
In unfavorable, i.e. especially wet conditions, some passages between Tor saddle and Torkopf are life-threatening due to the steep meadow slopes!

From the bus stop, walk back a few meters and turn left after the somewhat visually unconventional nature park house. Following the signage, now ascend the slope straightforwardly to reach a turning area. Slightly keeping to the right, a trail begins that leads steeply up to a forest road. Continue ascending to the right on this and at the fork reached shortly after, go left. The path leads with moderate inclines into the Ron valley and becomes increasingly flatter near the Ron valley alp meadows. Passing the alpine buildings with only slight inclines, behind which the narrowing path now orients towards the left side of the valley. Shortly before reaching a mostly dry, gravelly stream bed, the path forks; here keep left and cross the stream bed. On the other side, a trail continues, which initially ascends gently through loose forest. Soon the terrain becomes steeper, and generally keeping left, a scree field is reached. It continues winding with switchbacks somewhat more laboriously but technically easy uphill until the scree field below the Tor saddle is left to the left. Over steep, partly eroded meadows, the trail finally leads strenuously but quickly upwards into the already near notch.
After a breather, the technically most demanding part of the ascent to the Torkopf follows. Initially keeping left, an easy rock ridge is reached that had so far blocked the view to the Torkopf. On the other side, descend a few meters in steep, not to be underestimated terrain to bypass a rock. The narrow trail shortly after arrives at a meadow saddle where trail traces in the form of eroded steps lead almost directly up the very steep meadow. Once the trail orients slightly right and flattens somewhat, an unpleasantly exposed, especially slippery when wet, fall-hazardous passage must be negotiated. The following switchback must not be overlooked, after which the trail traces lead somewhat less exposed up to a rock step about chest-high. This must be climbed with some skill; fortunately, the entry is no longer in exposed terrain. Once the step is passed, the technical difficulty decreases significantly, although the trail still demands some attention in the steep meadow terrain until the now near summit of the Torkopf is reached.
The descent initially follows the same path back to the Tor saddle, with the difficulties known from the ascent requiring special caution on the descent. Having safely reached the saddle, begin the descent into the Tor valley keeping left, initially passing the fairly new building of the upper station of the Tor valley alp. Shortly after, a wayside cross placed on a scenic rock is passed, behind which the trail now descends somewhat steeper at times. During the descent into the valley floor, which finally reaches the Tor valley alp itself, various vegetation layers are crossed in quick succession. Upon reaching the alpine building, a drive path begins that initially stays on the left-hand side of the Tor stream. After crossing the stream, the path usually stays near the bank but increasingly bends right near the start of a gorge and finally leaves the Tor valley. Shortly after, a crossing path is reached that leads left into the already near valley floor of the Riß valley and intersects a road near a hiking parking area. Follow this on an accompanying footpath to the left and already in Hinterriß, go over a small hill to the starting point at the Gasthof Post and the bus stop located there.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The starting point Hinterriß can be reached during the summer months as follows:
- Take the Bavarian Oberlandbahn to Lenggries. From there, the mountaineer bus, line 9569 of RVO, runs up to three times daily towards Eng.
- On weekdays, there are travel options from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Krün and Wallgau towards Eng. However, the time window between arrival in Hinterriß and the only return journey option is quite small, so this connection is suitable only for very fast walkers for the route proposal.
Directions
The remote Riß valley in the heart of the Karwendel can be reached by car as follows:
- On the A8 Munich - Salzburg to the Holzkirchen (97) junction. From there take B318 to the Großhartpenning/Mitterdarching/Oberlaindern/Holzkirchen exit. In the center of Holzkirchen, turn left onto B13 towards Bad Tölz and follow B13 past Lenggries to the Sylvenstein reservoir. On the dam crest, turn right onto B307, which in Vorderriß turns left into a roundabout. After crossing the border to Tyrol, the clear village of Hinterriß is reached a few kilometers later.
- From the Inn valley, take the Inn Valley motorway Kufstein - Innsbruck to the Wiesing (39) junction. Continue on the Achensee road B181 to Lake Achensee and further towards Achen pass. Shortly before this, turn left onto B307 and follow it past Sylvensteinsee to Vorderriß; continue as before.
- From B2, Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Mittenwald near Krün, take the B11 towards Munich exit. Follow the federal road through Krün to Wallgau and shortly before the end of Wallgau village, turn right onto the toll road through the Isar valley to Vorderriß. There continue as before.
Parking
Several parking lots are available in Hinterriß. The easiest option is to park for free immediately on the left at the village entrance.Coordinates

Equipment
Sturdy footwear is mandatory for this route proposal. Depending on preference, poles may be helpful for the descent sections.
Since both Ron valley alp and Tor valley alp are at best simply managed, bring provisions and sufficient drinks in your backpack.
