The Kochel Sonnenspitze is one of those mountains whose name is easy to understand. Despite its relatively low height and location deep in the forest, the summit area of Sonnenspitze is located in a clearing that rises above a steep edge and offers beautiful views down to Lake Kochel. Except for the early morning hours, the sun reaches the often solitary summit area all day long - so it is worth climbing the summit even in the cooler seasons to enjoy a bit of sun. Since the ascent from Kochel is quite short, the route can easily be done as a relaxed after-work route in the evening hours during the summer months.
There are some old paths around Sonnenspitze that are no longer signposted but are still waiting to be discovered. The route suggestion covers several of these beautiful and worthwhile alternatives to the rather boring new forest road that provides vehicle access from Kochel to Kotalm.

Safety information
Despite the steepness of the ascent, there are no major danger aspects. Due to the lack of signposting on the paths used, some orientation skills are helpful.Roadbook
From Kochel station, turn right into Bahnhofstraße. Follow the main road through the town. After a pronounced left curve, Kalmbachstraße branches off to the left. Follow this for a short time and at the first opportunity turn right into Alte Straße. This first leads out of the town but later reaches built-up areas again. There, the street Am Sonnenstein continues slightly left, leading to the edge of the forest above the Laingraben. At the end of the settlement, a crossing forest road is reached. Turn left on this and shortly after cross the Laingraben via a bridge. On the other side, a path begins that turns left and reaches a wide forest road. Follow this to the left and just before the barrier turn right onto an unmarked but clearly visible path. This leads up the slope through an extended left curve. During the curve, the path splits: one variant continues through a small gully, another, preferred variant first runs parallel to the right above the gully. This one also soon branches again. This time keep left and follow the surprisingly appearing red-white marking. After some steps, shortly thereafter the forest road is reached just before a hairpin bend. Keep right and enter the bend. Adjacent is a round open area from which an unmarked but repeatedly marked path leads off to the right. This soon turns south, later southwest, and climbs steadily. After reaching the saddle to Kienstein, a very popular climbing rock, the still good path turns slightly to the left. Now partially very steep but basically easy to walk, it ascends with repeatedly beautiful views to a terrain ledge. Here a cart track comes up from the left, offering an alternative ascent. Continuing to rise southwards, the terrain quickly becomes steeper again. As soon as a beech forest is reached, the summit is not far, whose magnificent view promises a pleasant break.
For the descent, continue from Sonnenspitze in a half-circle to the slightly higher Graseck, from where a nice view back to Sonnenspitze is possible. There, a marked path leads left down on very pleasant, soft forest ground to point 1184, where the forest is left and — thanks to a previous windthrow area — there is a free view over to Hirschhörnlkopf. A small forest driveway then leads left to the junction with the forest road, which continues in the same direction. This now leads around Sonnenspitze in a wide left bend. After temporarily flatter sections, at the larger junction and clearing at point 1002 there is again a winding section with a steeper gradient. Already in the first right hairpin bend, the monotonous forest road is finally left: here an unmarked path branches off to the left, initially mostly running somewhat above the road and therefore regularly coming into view. Later the path course breaks away and shortcuts some bends, partly over roots and stones, down to the forest road bend and adjacent open area already known from the outward journey. Kochel and the station are then quickly and easily reached on the already familiar route.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The proposed route is ideally suited for arrival and departure by public transport: from Munich, a regional train runs hourly, mostly without transfers, to Kochel am See. The route description starts and ends directly at the Kochel station.Directions
From the A 95 motorway, junction Murnau/Kochel, drive a few kilometers via Schlehdorf to Kochel.Parking
Various parking options are available in Kochel. For the sake of the route description, it is easiest to park near the station.
Alternatively, parking on the outskirts in the street Am Sonnenstein is also possible, see the route description. However, only a few parking spaces are available there.
