The Rettenstein is the dominant peak of the Spertental. Due to its isolated location, it is known as an excellent viewpoint peak and is accordingly popular. To the north, the Rettenstein sends out the elongated ridge of the Spießnägel, which separate the Upper and Lower Grund from each other. Moreover, the Große Rettenstein marks the border area to the Salzburger Pinzgau. Therefore there are also two summits: the Salzburger and the Tyrolean summit. If you climb the mountain from the south side, there are some very appealing climbing routes for climbers. The approach can be made from Aschau near Kirchberg in Tyrol or from the south side through the Mühlbach valley located in Oberpinzgau (municipality of Bramberg).
