The Lechtal Alps are a vast mountain range: countless peaks stretch from the Arlberg to the Außerfern. Among them is the Parseierspitze, the highest peak of the entire Northern Limestone Alps. At the very northern edge of the Lechtal Alps, the elevation is naturally not quite as high, but their somewhat last peak, the Thaneller, impresses once again with everything that makes a great mountain. It rises steeply above the Reutte basin, and thanks to its relatively free position, the view from the highest point is simply magnificent. At least the south-facing ascent is quite easy to manage, making Thaneller a popular and frequently visited summit.
From Berwang, the initial ascent passes over summer-unattractive slopes until the actual summit climb begins. Through south-facing forest, the well-marked trail winds continuously uphill with many bends. Fortunately, views open up again and again, but at the latest upon reaching the dwarf pine zone and later the forest edge, one or the other scenic rest pause can be taken. At the summit, there is surely a quiet spot with beautiful panoramas: to the north, the Ammergebirge with Heiterwanger See and Plansee can be seen; to the east, the Wetterstein mountains with the Zugspitze. To the south, the gaze falls on the countless peaks of the Lechtal Alps; to the east, the Allgäu Alps are within reach. It is therefore worthwhile to visit the Thaneller preferably in good visibility conditions!

Safety information
The trails and paths are in good condition. Nevertheless, sure-footedness is recommended, especially above the tree line.Roadbook
From the Oberdorf Kirchplatz bus stop, turn towards the nearby church and continue along the tight right curve. Now gently ascending, follow the road up to the terrain crest. Just behind the chapel, turn half right; a small farm track initially runs largely parallel to the road. Soon the path becomes a trail that turns right and unfortunately loses a few meters in altitude down to the valley station of two ski lifts. Approximately under the left lift, a trail initially continues uphill roughly parallel to the lift route. As soon as the trail orients slightly to the left, a farm track is crossed shortly afterward. Now clearly keep left and continue ascending on signposted trail towards Thaneller. The meadow initially walked across is partly heavily eroded and quite steep and strenuous. But as soon as the trail reaches the nearby edge of the forest, it gets easier again. Orientation is very easy here, as there are no junctions or crossings for the next two hundred vertical meters. Then a small trail joins from the left; here, continue ascending on the right side through the forest. The views steadily improve, dwarf pines replace the trees, and shortly thereafter, thanks to the now completely open terrain, the summit is clearly visible. Over stones and occasionally some scree, it is reached without major technical difficulties.
The descent follows the same path back to Berwang but can be varied near the village. For this, go left onto the farm track after the eroded meadow and circle right below the storage lake into Berwang. As soon as the state road running through the village is reached, keep right and ascend a few meters to the bus stop.

Change trains in Bichlbach; the onward journey with regional bus line 5 (Biberwier - Lermoos - Bichlbach - Berwang) starts in Bichlbach at the Dorf stop and leads in a few minutes to Berwang.
The route description begins and ends directly at the Berwang Oberdorf Kirchplatz bus stop.
Directions
Berwang is easy to reach from many directions thanks to its location near the Fernpass federal road B 179. First, the neighbouring village Bichlbach is approached as follows:
- From the Allgäu via the A 7 to the border tunnel near Füssen and then continue past Reutte on the B 179 towards Fernpass;
- From Munich via the A 95 to the motorway end at Eschenlohe, continue on the B 2 to the outskirts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Then follow the B 23, which leads over Garmisch to the border crossing at Griesen. Follow the Austrian B 187 to Ehrwald and Lermoos to the junction with the Fernpass federal road B 179 and continue on this towards Reutte;
- From the Inntal motorway A 12, depending on the direction, either via Imst (junction Imst-Pitztal) or the Mieminger Plateau (junction Mötz) to Nassereith. Follow the Fernpass federal road B 179 starting there over the Fernpass and the Lermooser tunnel to Bichlbach.
In both directions, there are exits from the Fernpass federal road to Bichlbach at the beginning of the village. Then drive straight through the village and turn at the bridge to Berwang.
Parking
For the route to Thaneller, the car park at the Thanellerbahn is recommended. To reach it, cross the small village completely and turn right immediately behind the ski bridge.Coordinates
