This almost 30 km long route, with over 2000 m of altitude difference, climbs from Storo through woods and meadows, tunnels and trenches from the Great War, until it reaches the Tremalzo clearings.

Length and altitude difference make this hike a complete experience from the valley floor to the surrounding peaks. The route offers varied alpine landscapes, views over Lake Idro and Cima Tombea, and historical sights such as restored barns, trenches, tunnels and battle stations from World War I. The route alternates between grazing meadows, mule tracks in the forest and sections carved into the rock and tunnels.

    Author’s recommendation

Due to the long walking times, combined with a significant length and altitude difference, this route is suitable mainly for well-trained hikers.

    Safety information

Beware of the first crossing on State Road 240 to reach the cycle path. After Storo, there are no refreshment areas. Remember to bring sufficient water and food, considering the length and altitude difference of the route. Follow the signs carefully (SAT trail 444 towards Bocca di Cablone). Phone reception weakens as you approach Malga Alpo, where there is none.

As you can imagine, the practicality of itineraries in a mountain environment is closely linked to contingent conditions and is therefore subject to natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may be subject to change. Check the status of the route by contacting the mountain guides or local tourist offices before setting off.

    Tips and suggestions

A unique garden: crossing the Tremalzo and Tombea Ranges in summer means entering a unique area, with a humid climate and dolomitic limestone substrate that has helped endemic plant species, found only here, survive for thousands of years. Among them, there are Aquilegia thalictrifolia, Daphne petrea, Ranunculus bilobus, Silene elisabethae and the famous Saxifraga Tombeanensis, the saxifrage of Monte Tombea.

Archaeological site at altitude: at 1770 m, in Pozza Lavino, there is one of the oldest human sites in south-western Trentino to have been discovered, used by Mesolithic hunters around 9-10 thousand years ago and then as a hunting lodge until the Neolithic period, 6,000 years ago.

Monte Tombea’s name: according to a legend, a shepherd from Storo swore to be the owner of a piece of land afoot of Monte Tombea. To punish him, God opened the earth by swallowing him up with his sheep and dogs. The remaining piles of earth were named 'Tombea', or 'place of graves', in memory of the event.

    Roadbook

In Piane (Storo), park your car and take the cycle path in the direction of Lake d'Idro. When you reach the small iron bridge over the Palvico stream, turn onto the uphill SAT Trail 444 and do not leave it until you reach Passo Tremalzo (be careful not to take any possible detours along the way).

The SAT Trail 444 starts climbing up and leads to a capital depicting Saints Sebastian and Rocco, and, on the left, a road not to be taken. Continue straight on, keeping to the right, until you come to a forest road. Take it and follow the red and white markings until you reach the Nar plain. Once past the plain meadows, take the trail up the Toàc valley, keeping to it until you reach Spessa. From here, a wide and comfortable forest road leads to the Malga Alpo di Storo bivouac. Shortly after the Malga, the route veers to the left, leaving the asphalt road going down, to continue among the fir and beech trees along an old military road. After a while, the route climbs back up with wide bends in the midst of a thick scrub of mountain pines, along a trail partly carved into the rock, until it reaches the Caplone pass. Continue just below Cima Tombea, along a route filled with World War I trenches, tunnels and battle stations, and leading to Cima Caplone (or delle Guardie). From here, the road descends, sometimes carved into the rock, or in a tunnel, and leads to the Lorina mouth. Once there, continue straight up the steep ridge where the track becomes a trail before winding its way through the forest. After leaving the forest, continue on a trail that crosses grassy stretches and rocky outcrops for about an hour to the summit of Mount Fratone, after passing a short rocky section equipped with an iron ladder. Start on the new downhill section, leading to the forest road in the direction of Malga Lavino. Leave the Malga beneath you, and cross the dirt track to the Tremalzo meadows, the destination of your hike.

If you decided to walk back, follow the outward journey backward.
