Stenar is the easiest accessible peak above the Kriški Podi. It offers a beautiful view of Triglav and the surrounding peaks. The path to Stenar from Zadnjica is easy and marked, but it is long and has a large elevation gain, so you need to allow enough time for it and undertake it in good weather.

We ascend Stenar from the Zadnjica valley. Above the forest, we are delighted by beautiful views back towards Trenta. We continue along the increasingly panoramic slope to the Kriški Podi, where we visit the Lower Kriško Lake. From the lake, we return to the path towards Pogačnikov dom on the Kriški Podi. A little below the hut, signs direct us to the right. We follow the signs and markers to the summit of Stenar. Along the way, you can see chamois and ibex as well as alpine flowers. The spacious summit rewards us with views of Dolkova špica, Škrlatica, Cmir, Begunjski vrh, Triglav, Bovški Gamsovec, Planja, Razor, and Križ.

    Author’s recommendation

At the Kriški Podi, we can stay overnight in Pogačnikov dom and ascend another peak above them.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, we go along the road to the turnoff for Pogačnikov dom on the Kriški Podi, where we turn left onto the road leading to the lower station of the cargo cable car. From there, we continue on the marked mule track towards the Kriški Podi. Along the way, we cross several gorges and an exposed ledge equipped with a safety steel cable. The forest starts to thin out and the path becomes increasingly panoramic. We then reach above the tree line to a spring. Shortly after the spring, there is an unmarked path section to the right leading to the Lower Kriško Lake. After viewing the lake, we return to the path. A little below Pogačnikov dom, we turn right towards Pihavec, Bovški Gamsovec, Stenar, and Vrat. We ascend to Dovška vrata, where we continue straight towards Križ and Stenar. At the next fork, we continue right; the left leads to Križ. We follow the markings to the summit of Stenar. We return to the valley by the same route.
