Long but magnificent route in the upper section, to the rather rarely visited St. Gallner Spitz and the Admonter Frauenmauer. Both summits lie somewhat in the shadow of the Großer Buchstein, which is of course often visited. The ascent is from the rather unknown northern side, where there is no shelter hut.
On the forest road and bypassing the gravel plant on the left to the marked path (641). Continue right until the forest road turns into a trail. After two stream crossings, in the high forest, long and steep uphill to the entrance to the West Gorge. Here ascend with easy climbing with short safeguards to the West Gorge saddle. Crossing the south slope of the Frauenmauer following the markings until you can ascend to the St. Gallner Spitz. Short descent and from the low point of the traverse to the ridge crest and westwards along the ridge to the highest point. Descent off-path in the grass just at the drop to the West Gorge saddle. Now downwards to the right back to the West Gorge signpost and straight along the ascent route back to the starting point.

Tips and suggestions
Those with enough stamina can make a short detour from the West Gorge saddle in half an hour to visit the Gr. Buchstein. Avoid the shady West Gorge when wet and humid.

Route description: See also detailed "time-route diagram in the photo gallery".
ASCENT: From the parking lot (790 m) on the forest road to the barrier, past the transmission station, slightly down, then left onto the biker route. (Info Hannes 2022: Passage through the gravel plant is no longer allowed). Continue on the marked path (641) until the forest road turns into a trail. After two stream crossings around 860 and 880 m steeply uphill and climbing a ridge in the high forest. The ridge transitions into a kind of grassy hollow and then a traverse along the slope follows until we have a clear view of the summit structure at about 1295 m. Slightly left in the forest with partly mighty spruces and larches, continue steeply uphill, the larch forest becomes sparser and ends at around 1500 m. The dwarf pine zone begins and immediately we reach a bench at 1515 m. 750 meters of elevation gained. Now with a small counter-ascent to the next bench at 1720 m with a great view into the Enns valley. We cross a scree slope to the right, reach the rocks, and climb laboriously uphill to the left in a steep scree gully in open terrain up to the West Gorge signpost at 1920 m. 1170 meters elevation gain and a brisk 2 1/4 hours up to here.
Straight ahead it goes with easy climbing with 4 secured spots through the shady West Gorge to the West Gorge saddle at 2082 m. Here we are suddenly in the sun and look down to the Tieflimauer. Now we cross the grassy south slope of the Frauenmauer on a well-marked path to the low point at about 2055 m. Then gently rising eastwards until at the end you can quickly ascend left to the summit. The St. Gallner Spitz 2144 m has had a beautiful summit cross for some years now. Up to here 1435 meters elevation gain and a brisk 3 hours walking time. Magnificent viewpoint.
CROSSING and DESCENT: From the summit cross on the ascent route roughly to the low point of the traverse at 2055 m. Then we ascend right on the grassy south slope until we reach the ridge crest. Now follow this to the left, past a subsidiary summit at 2167 m slightly down and to the summit cairn 2173 m of the Admonter Frauenmauer. Now descend south along the edge into the West Gorge saddle 2082 m and down the West Gorge in grade I terrain to the signpost at 1920 m. Partly through rubble in the lower part of the West Gorge to the upper bench at 1720 m and to the lower bench at 1515 m. Now long and steeply down in the sparse larch forest and later in the high forest, until after the two stream crossings we reach the point at 840 m. Leave the marked path 641 and about 780 m turn left and back on the ascent route to the starting point. 170 meters descent and >2 1/2 hours.
Overall with the small counter-ascents there are 1605 meters elevation gain and a brisk 5 1/2 hours walking time to manage, route length approx. 14 1/2 km.
