Located at the end of a long ridge that extends from the heart of the Ötztal Alps to Mals, the Spitzige Lun offers a magnificent view over the valleys of the upper Vinschgau. The panorama of the surrounding mountain groups is also impressive, especially towards the nearby Ortler mountains.
From Matsch, the route initially ascends on forest roads towards Gondaalm until a good trail branches off. This leads over alpine meadows and the southwest flank of the Niederjoch mostly very comfortably and gently uphill to Spitzige Lun. Various options invite you to try different routes on the way back.

Roadbook
From the village center of Matsch at the small parking lot above the village shop, initially ascend on asphalt. After a short time, the signage points to the left at the height of a fountain, with paths no. 13 and 14 leading together uphill on the valley side out of the village. At the forest edge, the paths separate; path no. 13 keeps to the right and continues uphill as a forest road with some hairpin turns. Above a water basin, a trail branches off to the left immediately after a hairpin turn, which continues as path no. 13 and now becomes a bit steeper for a short stretch. Soon alpine pasture land is reached, at the lower edge of which a trail from the Tartscher Leger joins from the left. Heading slightly right, the path now goes almost exclusively over more open terrain with a gradually expanding view. Soon a larger fence is reached, running down the mountain slope from Niederjoch. The trail always remains on the left side but shortly afterwards noticeably shifts to the left and moves away from the fence. With only slight inclines, the path now leads fairly directly to Spitzige Lun and passes a junction to Niederjoch. Continuing straight ahead, the meadow summit with its excellent panoramic view is reached shortly thereafter.
The return route follows the same path back to Matsch. Alternatively, for the return journey, it is recommended to first follow the ridge line ascending to Niederjoch. From there, a newly marked and signposted trail begins, leading downhill to the right via Tartscher Kreuz and eventually merging into the trail known from the outbound route.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The starting point Matsch can be surprisingly well reached by public transport. The starting point of the connections is always the Mals train station, which can be reached by train from Meran or by various bus lines, including from the direction of Landeck (Tyrol) and Zernez (Grisons):
- Weekdays: by bus 278 from Mals train station to Matsch
- Sundays and holidays: by hiking taxi from Mals train station in the direction of Außerglieshöfe up to Matsch
Please note: the number of hiking taxi connections on weekends is limited. It is best to check departure times in advance!
Directions
The Matschertal is a side valley of the Vinschgau and is reached via a junction from state road 40, the Reschenpass road, in the Mals district of Tartsch:
- From the direction of Reschenpass: Drive down on state road 40 from Reschenpass towards Meran. After passing Mals, turn left towards Matsch at the exit of Tartsch.
- From the direction of Ofenpass and Münstertal: From Zernez, drive on national road 28 over Ofenpass into Münstertal up to the border crossing there. Drive via Taufers in Münstertal and Laatsch to Mals and continue as described above.
- From the direction of Stilfserjoch: From Bormio, drive on state road 38 over Stilfserjoch to Prad and further to Spondinig. Keep left there and drive on state road 40 towards Reschenpass. Turn right towards Matsch at the entrance to Tartsch.
- From the direction of Meran: Drive up through Vinschgau on state road 38. In Spondinig, continue straight on state road 40 towards Reschenpass and turn right towards Matsch at the entrance to Tartsch.
About 7 km after the junction from the state road, the small village of Matsch is reached.
Parking
In Matsch itself, very few parking spaces are available near the village shop or the Weißkugel inn. It is therefore recommended to park the car on the large, free, signposted parking lot before entering the village.Coordinates
