The ascent from the Hutterer Böden partly follows the ski piste area to the Schafkögel plateau. Then a great and demanding ascent begins at the secured Schrockengrat, followed by a magnificent, scenic ridge walk over the Kamin- and Kreuzspitz to the Hochmölbing.

From the parking lot somewhat down to the Hutterer Böden and unspectacularly to the Höß plateau. As the ski season in Hinterstoder is over, there is calm again. Further to the Schafkögel plateau, just below the 2000 m mark and on the Schrockengrat (secured) to the eponymous summit. Now begins a scenic ridge walk around 2300 m over the Kaminspitz and Kreuzspitz to the Hochmölbing (2341 m) in the Totes Gebirge. Using the toll road to the Hutterer Böden provides a high starting point for this very rewarding route, best in spring when snowfields enhance the view and the route.

Route description: See also the detailed "time-altitude diagram in the image gallery".

ASCENT: From the parking lot at 1400 m, descend over the Hutterer Böden 1380 m and preferably go directly up the piste to the Hutterer Alm and the Hößhaus (1827 m). Often still in snow to the reservoir and further to the plateau of the Schafkögel at 1999 m. Slightly down (1960 m) and to the notch where the Schrockengrat begins (1995 m). Around 2005 m chains make a difficult section easier, especially with snow cornices the difficulty here is rated as II. Then up the steep north face (caution) in the snow to the Schrocken 2289 m. The following ridge walk is easy but scenic. Down to ~2228 m and to the Kaminpitz 2328 m with a beautiful cross. Almost level to the Kreuzspitz 2333 m, into the saddle on the connecting ridge ~2301 m, and to the Hochmölbing 2342 m, the highest point of the route. Up to here approx. 1130 m elevation gain and 2 3/4 hours walking time.

DESCENT: The same way back from Hochmölbing 2341 m over Kreuzspitz 2333 m and Kaminspitz 2328 m to Schrocken 2289 m. Now challenging with necessary caution down the north slope and left to the ridge with the chains. Then easier again down the Schrockengrat and back on the ascent route to the parking lot at the Hutterer Böden 1400 m.

Total: 1315 m elevation gain and 5 1/2 hours walking time at a brisk pace.

    Equipment

A short lightweight ice axe or crampons are highly recommended on the north face of the Schrocken and provide more security, as conditions can often be difficult.

Liebe Elisabeth.
