Schreierkopf

From the parking lot at the Jochbach bridge  we walk  to the valley floor and keep left of the stream towards Schöneckerscharte.   The forest ascent begins under the Faulen Wand. Then a traverse to the right begins; if not mowed clear, it is through tall grass and bushes. The narrow path ascends with crossing several gullies in fall line to lead over a wide meadow slope into Schöneckerkar.   The steps can be muddy and somewhat exposed in places, especially after heavy rains. A view of the Rosskar peaks compensates for the effort.   We continue to ascend into stony terrain to Kreuzkarscharte, where after a distinctive large stone on the left the path to Schreierkopf begins. At the top on the ridge the further way gently ascends. After a break, back down to the col and descend to Kreuzkarsee. There still lies the engine block of a Canadian Halifax bomber. It was flown with autopilot into the Kreuzkarwand during World War II and crashed. Many iron parts were dismantled by locals and carried into the valley to sell the scrap. The return route follows the well-known ascent path.
