First, the path takes us up to the Weißkugelhütte, which is known for its unique location. Opposite it rises the massive Weißkugel massif, shaped by glaciers, moraines, and rocks. Behind the summit of Schmied, a deep rock notch is cut, and a mighty rock tower rises.
For glacier-experienced high alpine climbers, the Weißkugel and the Weißseespitze are the main summit targets from the hut, but the hut also has a three-thousander with an ice-free, considerably shorter, and well-marked ascent; or more precisely, there are even two – a shorter but somewhat exposed route over the south flank and west ridge of the mountain, and an easier but a bit longer ascent over the east side. So you can choose between the easier and the less easy, but the nicest is to combine both routes. This creates an interesting and varied circular route. The summit of Schmied, behind which a deep rock notch is cut and a mighty rock tower rises, bears only a cairn as summit marker. But not far below, on a shoulder of the southeast ridge called Eagle’s Head, stands an imposing cross, which is clearly visible from the hut and thus serves as a kind of guidepost.
