Beautiful and adventurous hike in the Salzkammergut mountains in Salzburg. On the Schafberg, a beautiful view opens again over Mondsee and Wolfgangsee.
Author’s recommendation
The first part up to Eisenauer Alm is not demanding and offers a beautiful view over Mondsee.
The starting point is the parking lot of the public swimming area at Mondsee. From there, it goes a bit steeper into the forest, where after a short time you pass the Kreuzstein waterfall, a first highlight of the route! Afterwards, continue through the forest, crossing several small streams and a bridge construction up to a hut, from where there is a beautiful view over Mondsee. After a few minutes, the Eisenauer Alm with the Buchberghütte is also reached. The route so far is also possible with children. On the Eisenauer Alm, take a right over the alpine meadows back into the forest and then steeply up to a small lake. From there, head right always along the foot of the Schafberg summit. The last section – the so-called Himmelspforte – is demanding: the steep and rocky path should only be taken when dry. Descent as ascent or by cog railway to St. Wolfgang. Please note that you may have to return to your starting point at Mondsee.
