The Sagernock, often also called Achternock, is part of the Rieserferner group and 2,665 meters high. The reason why only a few stray to this peak is probably because the ascent from the Lower Gelltal Alm is pathless and only marked with cairns through a lot of blockwork and ends somewhat exposed. At the summit, there is a beautifully crafted cross with an eagle at the top, from where you have a magnificent view down to Sand in Taufers.

    Safety information

Be careful on the large blocks, some may be loose. Better to do only in good visibility, otherwise orientation might be difficult.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot of the Rieserferner hut before Rein in Taufers, follow the marked path towards the Rieserferner hut until you reach the Lower Gelltal Alm. At the Lower Gelltal Alm, follow a vague path that branches into a small valley towards Gschlössl. When you reach the blockwork, you can already spot the first cairns, which guide you quite well through the stone ravine up to an abandoned, wild plateau. From there, you have the Sagernock with its forbidding east wall in view. Occasional cairns lead further over a block slope into a gravelly gully where the rock climb begins. Somewhat exposed and partly grade 2, you reach the summit structure where the eagle appears. Hard to reach directly, the summit can be bypassed generously to the north, where the ascent is easier. Alternatively, you can follow a clear crack that runs diagonally down from the summit and scramble up it (II+). Descent as ascent.
