    Author’s recommendation

The gorge trail at Schwarzenbach offers many beautiful photo opportunities

Depending on the descent option, the ascent to the Buchstein Hut via the forest road can also be easily managed with a mountain bike.

    Ascent:
From the parking lot, we follow the wide forest road a short way upstream to a bridge. We cross the Schwarzenbach here and then leisurely hike along the gorge trail towards Ross- and Buchstein. Shortly before rejoining the forest road, we follow a small path to the right leading to two large waterfalls.
Back on the forest road, we keep left and turn onto a small trail towards the Buchstein Hut. Further along, the path becomes a bit steeper, repeatedly crossing the forest road and quickly brings us to another junction toward the Buchstein Hut. Here, we keep right and now easily follow the forest road to the privately managed Buchstein Hut.
Immediately left behind the hut, the trail continues to the Tegernseer Hut and to Ross- and Buchstein. In a gentle right curve, it flattens somewhat around the summit section and at the next signpost turns left towards the Tegernseer Hut. The last meters lead us via somewhat steeper switchbacks up to the hut terrace, between Ross- and Buchstein. Across the terrace to the right towards the summit ridge of Rossstein and up a small trail to the scenic summit.

Descent: same as ascent. Those who want can climb up to Buchstein on the right behind the Tegernseer Hut (exposed I-II).
Those who keep right at the signpost shortly before the Buchstein Hut skip the hut and shorten the route slightly.

Option I: On the descent from Rossstein, keep right at the signpost and descend via a wire cable-secured trail (RB 2) down to Sonnenbergalm. At the alp, keep left and reach the forest road via a few switchbacks, the same one used on the ascent to the Buchstein Hut. Follow it downhill until you meet your ascent path again and descend it back to the parking lot.

Option II: On the descent from Rossstein, keep right at the signpost and descend via a wire cable-secured trail (RB 2) down to Sonnenbergalm. From the flat alp basin, descend through many switchbacks down through forest to the parking lot shortly before Bayerwald. Cross the main road here, briefly west, and cross a bridge to the south bank of the Weißbach. Continue east along the bike path to Winterstube and back to the start point (about 45-50 minutes walking time from Bayerwald to Winterstube).
