Gostilna SovdatSafety information
The route is suitable for ordinary hikers all year round, but in winter the entire upper section can be icy and deeply snow-covered. In heavy snow winters, we absolutely discourage returning and descending to the Kluže fortress, as the route runs through a very avalanche-prone area.
Special caution is needed in winter on the long, steep slope called Naklo (just below the northern wall of Rombon), which is avalanche-prone and often icy.
Caution is also required when descending from position 1313 towards Fort Hermann, as it runs along a steep slope often covered with fallen leaves. The descent from position 1313 on an unmarked path towards the Plajer farm is discouraged for less experienced hikers regarding orientation.
Since most of the path runs on the sunny side of the mountain, we recommend starting the hike in the early morning hours.
This is an easy mountain route. Use of mountain paths is at your own risk.
Tips and suggestions
Due to its length, the route is discouraged for less physically prepared hikers.
There is practically no drinking water along the entire route; we recommend you supply yourself abundantly before starting the hike.
Roadbook
The start of this long, but very beautiful mountain route dotted with historical points is in the center of Bovec. If you decide on a shorter version right at the beginning, we recommend driving by car to the last farm Pri Zajcu at Visna. There is usually no problem with parking there. This saves you about half an hour. From there, the path immediately leads into a rocky world, but it does not go over steep terrains. After about an hour of walking, with beautiful views of Bovec, the path turns into an old beech forest, which we leave just a few dozen meters below the hunting lodge on Goričica. The lodge is not intended for outside visitors and is closed for most of the year. From there, the path is less steep and on the right side we soon notice the first historical monuments, remains of an old military cemetery, and above it the caverns of the Italian hospital from the First World War. Various caverns and remains from that period accompany us almost along the entire rest of the route. When we reach an altitude of about 1700 meters, we recommend a smaller side detour to the top of Čukla, where a monument – an obelisk – stands. Those who are less physically prepared can finish their ascent here, as this intermediate summit also offers plenty of beautiful views of the Bovec basin and the chain of Kanin-Rombon peaks above the Rombon pastures. The others continue literally between former battle positions from bloody history. Soon after, we arrive under the northern vertical wall of Rombon. Due to occasionally falling stones and icy stalactites in winter, we recommend putting on a helmet here, and at the foot of the Naklo area in winter crampons and an ice axe.
In summer, this point is livelier, as with a little luck you can also see families of marmots sunbathing in front of their holes and on the rocks.
For winter mountaineers: the slope here is about 45 degrees and on settled and processed snow it is usually icy. The exit from the slope is especially demanding. After overcoming this hardest part of the route (both in summer and winter), usually there are no more major difficulties to the summit. The summit offers a magnificent 360-degree view of almost all the Western Julian Alps; especially enchanting below us is the valley of Loška Koritnica with Log pod Mangartom in the middle and its guardians, Mangart and Jalovec.
A usually well-prepared hiker needs about 5 good hours to reach the summit in summer. This is followed by a descent, which is significantly shorter (about 3 hours) if you decide to return by the same route. If you want to complete a loop, at the top of Naklo (before the steepest part) turn left and follow the marked path down through the grassy-rocky slopes of Veliki vrh (another name for Rombon). Lower down we reach well-preserved battle positions again, this time Austro-Hungarian. The path then quickly descends and soon, when we reach the forest border, after a few turns we reach the legendary military observation post 1313 (about 100 meters from the main path). From here, the main path quickly descends relatively steeply towards Fort Hermann. We advise caution here especially in autumn, as fallen leaves often cover the otherwise well-marked path. From Fort Hermann to the Kluže fortress below runs a nice, renovated mule track that leads us just before the fortress through a 150 m long illuminated tunnel. In the Kluže fortress, a bar is also open in summer, where you can refresh yourself with various drinks. If the descent from the summit has tired you too much, you can call a taxi here, as the center of Bovec is still about an hour's walk away. First, you need to walk along the main road to the entrance/exit point Kluže (for kayakers), then descend down the bank to the Koritnica river. From here to Bovec the path runs practically flat and the tour is thus finished after about 8 to 9 hours.
