This scenic mountain hike leads from the country road between Filzmoos and Ramsau am Dachstein via Bachlalm and the Sulzenhals to an impressive summit offering magnificent panoramic views of the Dachstein massif. The approach itself offers a varied landscape and impressive views. After the first few kilometres on the road, which is closed to public traffic, the route continues along a forest road and tractor track towards the Sulzenhals. The distinctive Rötelstein accompanies you on the left, while the expansive Windlegerkar opens up on the right, with the mighty Torstein rising behind it. At the Sulzenhals, the more demanding section begins: the trail climbs steeply up the northern face over scree and rocky, uneven sections. CAUTION: There is a risk of falling rocks along the route from the Sulzenhals onwards! Sure-footedness, sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness are essential here. Higher up, the terrain becomes easier again and you eventually reach the open summit area. In good visibility, a spectacular panorama unfolds, with views of Torstein, Mitterspitz and Dachstein as well as the surrounding peaks and valleys. This varied tour is ideal for experienced hikers who appreciate nature, a challenge and magnificent panoramic views.
Author’s recommendation
From the Sulzenhals onwards, be particularly alert due to the risk of falling rocks and make sure conditions are safe and your footing is secure.
GPS Data and Orientation Aids Available GPS data – like hiking maps – are only intended as orientation aids, as they can never fully represent the exact layout or detail of a trail in reality. Especially in potentially dangerous areas, it is essential to make decisions based on the actual conditions on site regarding whether and how to proceed.

Roadbook
The starting point of the mountain tour is the car park on the country road between Filzmoos and Ramsau am Dachstein, right on the border between the federal states of Salzburg and Styria, at the turn-off for Bachlalm and Dachsteinruhe. From here, the tour initially follows the asphalt road, which is closed to public traffic. The first approximately three kilometres lead steadily but pleasantly uphill towards Bachlalm. Those who wish to shorten the approach can also cover this section by taxi or the Marmot Express. Bachlalm itself invites you to stop for refreshments – except on Tuesdays, when it is closed. Shortly before Bachlalm, however, you leave the forest road and turn west onto a tractor track. You now venture deeper into the alpine landscape and head straight towards the Sulzenhals. Two impressive mountain backdrops accompany you along the way: the Rötelstein rises to the left, while on the right the expansive Windlegerkar opens up, with the mighty Torstein towering behind it. With every step, the views become more impressive, already offering a taste of the magnificent panorama awaiting you at the summit. Once you reach the Sulzenhals, your gaze is initially drawn almost inevitably to the imposing Bischofsmütze, which rises dramatically before you. However, the trail does not continue in this direction, but instead turns south at a right angle. The more demanding section of the ascent now begins. The trail crosses partly loose scree and rocky, uneven sections, requiring sure-footedness and careful concentration, particularly along this stretch. The path continues steeply uphill along the northern face until the terrain gradually becomes easier and more pleasant to walk. Eventually, you reach the largely open summit terrain and draw closer to the panoramic summit. Once at the top, good visibility reveals an overwhelming panorama. Particularly impressive is the view of the mighty trio of Torstein, Mitterspitz and Dachstein. The surrounding peaks and valleys also reveal themselves in all their alpine splendour. The summit invites you to pause, take in the impressive mountain scenery and look ahead to the next destinations. This tour combines a varied approach with a more demanding alpine final ascent and an exceptional summit experience. The constantly changing scenery is particularly appealing, ranging from forest and gravel roads to open alpine meadows, rugged mountain terrain and the magnificent panorama around the Dachstein. Sure-footedness, sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness are required for the more demanding section from the Sulzenhals onwards.

Equipment
Sudden Weather Changes, Rapid Temperature Drops, Thunderstorms, Wind, Fog, and Snowfields These are objective dangers and require appropriate behavior while hiking. Hut hosts are experienced mountain experts and can provide valuable advice about the weather and trail conditions. Inadequate equipment, overestimation of one’s abilities, carelessness, poor fitness, and misjudgment can lead to critical situations.
In case of thunderstorms: Avoid summits, ridgelines, and fixed-rope sections at all costs.
A good backpack is helpful, and for routes in alpine terrain, a hat, gloves, a good jacket, and pants are essential basic equipment. Sturdy, waterproof footwear, sunglasses, sun protection, and plenty of fluids are also crucial. A flashlight, map material, knife, and a small first aid kit should always be part of your gear.
