A scenic and technically challenging loop hike to the 2,247-meter-high Rötelstein in the Dachstein Mountains above Filzmoos.
From the Rettensteinhütte (hiking parking lot above Filzmoos), the route leads via the Ahorneggalm and the varied southwest ridge to the summit. The ridge ascent includes several easy climbing sections and some exposed passages.
The descent follows the steep northeast face down to the Sulzenhals. Extra caution is required here due to loose, slippery scree and the risk of falling rocks.
The route then continues via the idyllic Sulzenalm—which offers places to stop for refreshments —back to the starting point along alpine pastures, forest roads, and trails.
Despite its relatively short distance, the tour is technically challenging and requires sure-footedness, a head for heights, and alpine experience. Extra caution is advised in wet conditions, poor visibility, or snowy conditions.

Rettensteinhütte → Ahorneggalm → Rötelstein → Sulzenhals → Sulzenalm → Rettensteinhütte
The ascent begins on Trail 670 through the forest and alpine pastures to the Ahorneggalm. The trail then becomes distinctly more alpine: it leads up the southwest slope to the ridge of the Rötelstein. The final section (approx. 300 meters of elevation gain) to the summit includes several easy climbing sections and some exposed passages.
Descent: From the summit, Trail 639 leads steeply down the northeast face—which is in places very rocky—to the Sulzenhals. This section is technically challenging and requires special caution due to loose rock and the risk of falling rocks. It also includes short sections requiring scrambling.
The route then continues relatively flat across forest and alpine meadows via the Sulzenalmen back to the Rettensteinhütte.
