A beautiful route around the Riffelsee — first along the shore, then at altitude around it back to the Plodersee. They offer beautiful views of the mountain landscape around and onto the Riffelsee. The route progressively increases in difficulty from T1 to T3. In the second half of the route, long patches of residual snow may still lie in T2 and T3 terrain.

A wonderful mountain route around the highest mountain lake of North Tyrol. Due to the "train access" with the cable car, the starting point is very comfortably reachable. The route increases gradually: the path on the north shore of the lake is a service road (T1) and accessible with a wheelchair and pram (up to the bridge at the end of the lake). You can take a break halfway with a raft ride on the Riffelsee. This part of the route is correspondingly very busy. In the second half, it goes into the beautiful Riffeltal (T2) and becomes quieter. You still have to expect residual snowfields longer; if these are still there and the path is not clearly visible, it is rather T3. The final ascent is steep but short; afterwards it continues only slightly uphill (T3) at altitude parallel to the south shore of the Riffelsee towards the Plodersee (T3, partly scree fields and occasional blockwork). Here you can enjoy the view of the Riffelsee and the mountain world. The Plodersee is crystal clear and you have almost made it. It now goes only — although steeply — over alpine meadows (slippery when wet, T2) and then down a service road; almost to the Riffelseehütte. Here a last ascent (T2) where you can stop for refreshments. Return to the Sunna Alm via T2. Everything is well signposted/marked.

    Safety information

T3 Please note: The route lies at an altitude between 2000 and 3000 meters. At these heights the air is thinner (less oxygen), which can lead to strongly fluctuating walking times. Therefore, the standard walking time is probably rather tight for many. The indication of path difficulty according to the SAC scale (T1 — T6) should be observed and is to be seen as complementary to the star ratings. Currently, AVAktiv unfortunately does not allow tagging a (mountain) hike accordingly, so the classification by SAC scale does not affect the classification of the route as easy, medium, or difficult! A route automatically classified as easy by the system can still be challenging and require alpine skills. Details about the SAC scale can be found at: https://magazin.alpenverein.de/artikel/schwierigkeitsgrade-von-bergwegen_8de95a6d-b490-4963-86cf-a0907c48a331 The SAC scale classification is subjective and without guarantee. The difficulty levels always correspond to the route under optimal conditions. Weather factors such as moisture, ice, fog, and wind can make a route much more difficult quickly.

    Roadbook

From Sunna Alm downhill to the docking station of the Riffelsee raft and further along the north shore of the lake heading west to its end, then shortly turn south (T1). There you reach a bridge from which you can return along the southern shore (this becomes T2), or for this route, turn right (west). From here, on mountain paths (T2, short T3 sections) continue uphill to the Hohe Riffel. There turn left and climb steeply south-southeast; the mountain path then continues moderately steep to the east; partly over scree fields and blockwork (T3) to the Plodersee. From here over alpine meadows (T2) and finally a service road (T1) steeply down to the Riffelseehütte and from there back to Sunna Alm (T2).
