Safety information
At Schweizer Tor there are two different options to descend a bit into the valley. The shorter one is very steep and can be dangerous; sure-footedness and a head for heights are required here. We chose the longer, not steep path that first leads south-southeast and then back northwest.Roadbook
From Rells head up south, initially easy, then a bit steeper. Pass the lower and upper Zaluanda alpine pastures to Schweizer Tor, go through Schweizer Tor to the Swiss side. Here a steep path, partly with rope security and a ladder, leads down.
You can then optionally descend a steep, more dangerous route that also shortens the way considerably. This is, however, recommended only for experienced, sure-footed, and fearless mountain hikers. We chose the longer, safe, and not steep "detour".
Now follow the well-marked hiking trails west to Gafalljoch and return again to Austria. A small summit, Lüneregg (2296m), can be easily reached in a few minutes. Then descend to Lünersee, circle the lake (optionally left or right), reach the dam to the "Böser Tritt," which leads down to the bus stop (valley station Lünerseebahn). Those who do not want to take this descent can of course also take the Lünerseebahn down.
