Selected alternatives for you
    The Reißkofel is the highest mountain of the Gailtal Alps and is a rock mountain that steeply drops on all sides, whose ascent requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. The Gailtal high route 229 also leads over the summit, from which there is an excellent panoramic view.

    Tips and suggestions

    Places to eat: Jochalm and Gasthaus Augstan in Reisach;

    The Julius Kugy Three-Country Trail, a long-distance hiking trail in Slovenia, Friuli, and Carinthia, also passes over the Reisskofel. Further information can be found on the website www.julius-kugy-alpine-trail.eu.

    Roadbook

    We drive from Reisach via the Reißkofelbad to the Jochalm, about 45 minutes. From there we go to the hunting lodge and past it through many switchbacks in loose mountain forest up the steep slope to the so-called Alpelspitz at 1960 m above sea level. A distinctive rock head and magnificent views downwards invite you to rest. We then either climb very steeply over the Hochfleck directly to the ridge (with fixed ropes) or go northeast to the Kleiner Reißkofel and via route 229 towards the summit. This route is mostly chosen as a descent, but it is also very gravelly and rocky.

    After about 2½ hours we reach the summit, which offers a comprehensive panoramic view due to its central location. Descent via routes 229 and 235.

    The approach to the Reißkofel can also be made from the Compton Hut or the Weißbriacher Hut.
