The Rainstock is an almost 1300 m high mountain between Gaming and Lackenhof with great views (especially of the Ötscher).
The shortest approach starts in Lackenhof/Raneck.
Unmarked to Steingrabenkreuz.
Also reachable via the beautiful, marked path through the Kesselgraben.
From Steingrabenkreuz unmarked, mostly on forest roads, good orientation required.
The approaches from Gaming via the Gföhler Alm are significantly longer (some marked approaches with approx. 900 meters of elevation gain).
Here I present an interesting approach from Filzmoos (= transition from Gaming to Urmannsau in the Vorderen Tormäuer).
Through the Heindlgraben, through which our ascent leads, tree trunks were transported down into the valley before the time of timber transport by truck using a complex chute.
The presented ascent up to "Holzschlag" is the accompanying path of this still quite visible "wood transport chute".
If you are interested in getting to know this "chute", I recommend visiting http://www.cavefischer.at/cavenoewest/html/hkm/hkm1824-70.html
Author’s recommendation
Long, rather flat hike with wonderful views!
From Lackenhof through the Kesselgraben to the Steingrabenkreuz.
Further on forest roads (good sense of orientation necessary) towards the Blöckerwand, then east of it to the summit plateau.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Safety information
Safety features on the climb are not reliable!Roadbook
At the highest point of the road from Gaming to Urmannsau (elevation 525 m) there are good opportunities to park cars.
On the south side of the road signposts: to the right path 21, to the Kartäuser cave and the Gföhlsattel; to the left path 21 leads on a long forest road to the Gföhl Alm.
Please note: Image 1 shows how the paths lead uphill here.
We take the unmarked path (dotted yellow in image 1), which leads south (uphill) between the two above-mentioned options.
Exactly at the second hairpin (stone man) begins our trail, which leads uphill, getting steeper on the steep slope of the Schwarzenberg.
Soon the "wood transport chute" becomes visible.
Some steep sections are to be overcome, some sections have safety features (not completely reliable!).
After about 1.6 km the terrain flattens and we arrive in a stream bed.
The path is not easy to find here; at the first good opportunity we climb out of the ditch to the left and go uphill until we reach the meadows of "Hochschlag".
Here a forest road comes in from the left, two go to the right. From the right ones we take the left one, which leads us out to the Gföhler saddle (1.1 km from Hochschlag).
From here there are markings and signposts.
We turn sharply left, at the next forest road intersection left again, and soon leave the forest road to the right and climb along the north side of the Gföhler Almspitze to the open meadows of the Gföhler Alm (1.4 km from the Gföhler saddle).
From here possibly a short detour to the Gföhler Alm.
We continue climbing 1.2 km along the edge of the forest to the summit of Rainstock. Wonderful views.
Descent the same way down to the Gföhler Alm.
Just before the Gföhler Alm there is a first descent option:
Access road to the Gföhler Alm = around the Wieskogel to Filzmoos = 7.5 km.
We took descent 2:
back as in the ascent to the Gföhler saddle.
At the hunting lodge turn left, on the forest road first flat, then down in 7 switchbacks, (passing the access to the Kartäuser cave) down to Filzmoos = 5.6 km from the Gföhler saddle to Filzmoos.
Descent 3 starts at the Gföhler saddle:
Left of descent 2 on marked path down to an Alm, at the next intersection keep right and through the Ebertal valley, at the next intersection keep right again and flat out to Filzmoos = 3.7 km.
