Preddvor-Storžič-Podlog

SHORT ROUTE DESCRIPTION: 

Stop Preddvor-Mače-east Sv. Miklavž-Suhi vrh-Gora (994 m)-Pl. Kališče-Mountain hut at Kališče-Slovenska planina trail-Bašelj pass/Transversala Storžič (TS)-Storžič-Praprotnikova hut-Jekarica-Planina Podstoržič-Dol-Podlog/Gh. Kanonir, optional: Zgornje Jezersko/Vila Koman

DETAILED ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

1.  We hike from the church in Preddvor (482 m) briefly along the country road to the north, then at the right curve take the side street (Šolska ulica) heading northwest to the district of Mače. Here we hike right, east and shortly afterwards at a fork slightly left to the parking lots. We steadily hike uphill along a main service road (HWW) and leave it after about 1.2 km (1st break, 2.7 km, 750 m).

2.  A natural path leads us northwest to Suhi vrh (918 m), ignoring 7 left and 6 right diverging paths (follow GPS!). We walk north, cross a HWW and continue on the hiking trail uphill to the mountain Gora - west of it we take a 2nd break, 3.6 km, 977 m.

3.  We continue uphill - after about 200 m we cross a HWW and shortly afterwards walk briefly on another HWW, which we leave again at a fork. After about 600 m we cross another HWW and after about 500 m at elevation 1250 m take the 3rd break, 1250 m.

4.  After about 600 m we reach Pl. Kališče (1395 m) - at the hiking crossroads we go straight north and immediately afterwards east. A natural path leads us somewhat steeper uphill to the Mountain hut at Kališče, west of Mount Kališče (1509 m) - we take the 4th break, 5.9 km, 1534 m.

5.  On the north side of the hut begins the Slovenska planina trail No. 1 and the hiking path Transversala Storžič (TS) - they bring us after about 1.2 km up to Bašelj pass. Here we meet the long-distance trail Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg and take the 5th break, 7.1 km, 1630 m.

ALTERNATIVE 1: Follow the Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg down into Jekarica and Planina Podstoržič and hike along the river Reka northeast to the district Podlog of the municipality Jezersko to Gh. Kanonir or Vila Koman.

6.  We turn northwest, guided by the two long-distance trails and the Transversala Storžič, and steadily hike uphill along the path and take at the forest edge the 6th break, 7.7 km, 1860 m.

7.  We continue northwest and reach the Krainer Storschitz/Storžič on a steep path with several small climbing sections (secured by rope) - we walk about 60 m further west (due to sheep droppings) and take the 7th break, 8.3 km, 2132 m.

8.  Here we enjoy the magnificent view and hike back to Bašelj pass and take - while gazing towards the Krainer field - the 8th break, 9.4 km, 1630 m.

9.  We hike north on a path and shortly after on a natural path downhill, accompanied by the long-distance trails Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg and Slovenska planina trail No. 1, passing the unmanaged Praprotnikova hut in Jekarica after about 700 m. After about 1.4 km in a beautiful forest area we meet a HWW at a signpost - here we take the 9th break, 11.5 km, 1030 m.

10.  We continue hiking on the HWW downhill and encounter the river Reka at the level of Planina Podstoržič (elevation 994 m) - it accompanies us over the dispersed settlement Dol to the district of the municipality Jezersko: Podlog. The connection E 7b to the Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg ends at Gh. Kanonir or Vila Koman in Zgornje Jezersko (16.5 km, 720 m).

ALTERNATIVE 2: We hike north on the slightly uphill Kokra road No. 210 to Zgornje Jezersko to Vila Koman (approx. 3.6 km) or organize a "hut taxi" Kanonier or Vila Koman.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:

1. From the church in Preddvor (482 m) we briefly take the country road north, then at the right curve turn onto the side street (Šolska ulica) at the right bend heading northwest to the district of Mače. Here we go right, east and shortly afterwards at a fork left to the parking lots. 4. After about 600 m we reach Pl. Kališče (1395 m) - at the crossroads we go straight south and then east. A natural path leads us somewhat steeper to the Mountain hut at Kališče, west of Mount Kališče (1509 m) - we take the 4th break, 5.9 km, 1534 m.

5. Slovenska planina trail No. 1 and the hiking path Transversala Storžič (TS) start at the northern side of the hut - after about 1.2 km they lead us to Bašelj pass. Here we encounter the long-distance hiking trail Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg and take the 5th break, 7.1 km, 1630 m.

ALTERNATIVE 1: We descend via Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg into Jekarica and Planina Podstoržič and hike along the river Reka northeast to the Podlog district in the municipality of Jezersko to Gh. Kanonir.

6. We turn northwest, guided by two long-distance hiking trails and Transversala Storžič, steadily hike on the path and take the 6th break near the tree line, 7.7 km, 1860 m.

7. We continue northwest and reach Krainer Storschitz / Storžič on a path with several smaller climbing sections (secured with rope) - we walk about 60 m further west (due to sheep droppings) and take the 7th break, 8.3 km, 2132 m.

8. Here we enjoy the wonderful view and return to Bašelj pass and take the 8th break, 9.4 km, 1630 m, while our eyes wander towards the Kranj field.

9. Heading north, we walk on a steep path and shortly after on a natural path downhill, accompanied by the long-distance trails Julius-Kugy-Dreiländerweg and Slovenska planina trail No. 1, passing the unmanaged Praprotnikova hut in Jekarica after about 700 m. After approx. 1.4 km in a beautiful forested area we meet a HWW at a signpost - here we take the 9th break, 11.5 km, 1030 m.
