The Preber, the local mountain of Tamsweg popular in summer and winter, can be climbed much more quietly via the Mühlbachtörl and its north ridge.
Via the Preber Halterhütte and the Preber basin, finally steeply up to the Mühlbachtörl and over the steep, blocky-flat north ridge up to the Preber summit cross. Descent on the well-frequented normal route over the mighty south ridge back to Prebersee.

The route can of course also be done in the opposite direction.

Roadbook
From the Ludlalm at Prebersee we hike briefly northwards on the forestry road. Soon the rooty forest paths begin, which shorten the gravel road that leads past Prodingeralm in several switchbacks to the Preberhalterhütte. Just above the hut we follow the marked path through the alpine meadows to the left (to the right leads to the Grazerhütte and on the normal route to the Preber). Around a terrain edge we reach the relatively flat Preber basin between Golzhöhe and the west flank of the Preber. In several gentle stages through the basin and over the steep northwest flank of the Preber we climb in a few switchbacks to the uppermost cirque between Roteck and Preber. Up short switchbacks on the steep south runoff of the Roteck, then in a slightly exposed traverse to the right to the Mühlbachtörl.
The saddle is crossed southwards a little to the right of the escarpment edge to the base of the north ridge. In several short steep stages, ridge blocks are scrambled over or bypassed, with short, steep hiking terrain in between. A larger rock ramp is bypassed on the west flank, a scree-like flattening is crossed to the final summit ramp. A few coarser blocks more, then the broad summit plateau and soon the summit cross with book and resting bench is reached.
Descent on the normal route first over the small-block south ridge to the steep east gully. Here we turn right into the moderately steep, very wide meadow flank, which descends in several long switchbacks on a stony-grassy path to the Preberhalterhütte. Finally back on the familiar path to Prebersee.
