Alternatively, the ascent can be shortened by using the Salzbergbahn funicular.

    Roadbook

The starting point of the route is at the valley station of the funicular, from where it goes via the initially paved Salzbergweg to the Rudolfsturm. Then continue on path 640 past the salt mine, first moderately ascending through the wide high valley and later steep and partially secured with ropes to the summit of the Plassen.

Descent via path no. 643 towards Gosau, then southeast to Schiechlingalm (path no. 645) and further to path no. 640 back to Rudolfsturm.

From here, it goes along the brine path (“circular route variant H”) over the Hölle, the gorge of the Mühlbach, past historical display boards and through the Bannwald back to Hallstatt.
