The only 1674 m high Pico Gilbo dominates the landscape around the town of Riaño with its distinctive summit formation. No wonder then that this viewpoint summit towering over the turquoise reservoir of Riaño is extremely popular with locals. The normal route is technically easy, skillfully leading through the weak points of the massive summit formation and also allowing sure-footed hikers to reach the coveted summit. Climbers appreciate the mountain because of its steep south faces, which mostly have very rough and compact rock. For experienced mountaineers, however, the long, elegant east ridge is probably the most rewarding ascent variant. It winds directly from the shore of the reservoir towards the summit. Exposed walking passages alternate with steep ascents (up to II), providing variety.
