The Pic de Rochebrune is technically easier than its forbidding, jagged shape suggests, but you have to struggle through loose scree and crumbly gullies for the last 400 altitude meters from Col des Portes to the summit. The panoramic view of the Écrins massif and Monviso makes up for the effort. The key section, a short wall secured with a fixed rope (III), can be avoided by ascending through a couloir (II).
