The Path of Encounter is a historically significant cross-border mountain route in the Karawanks.
The main part of the rewarding mountain hike runs along the ridge of the Karawanks with great views of Lake Faak and the Villach basin, and to the south the rugged peaks of the Julian Alps.

At the Mitzl-Moitzl Hut there is an emergency shelter under the roof. This is accessible from the outside.
Roadbook
Starting from the parking lot of Baumgartnerhof, the forest and meadow path (trail no. 603) leads to the forest road towards Jepzaalm (trail no. 682). You follow the forest road uphill to an elevation of 1023 m. At the marked right turn, the path branches straight ahead and shortens the forest road with a direct ascent near the stream to 1290 m. There are two springs along the path.
You join the level forest road and branch off towards Jepzasattel (!) (trail no. 682A). After a few minutes walking on the forest road, you follow at the next fork the narrow path to Jepzasattel, ascending more steeply. Jepzasattel is reached after about 20 minutes. Following the ridge westwards, you take the path (former customs officer path) up to the summit of Schwarzkogel, the highest point of the route.
After a rewarding break in the relaxation lounger directly at the summit with a view of the Julian Alps, you continue descending westwards along the path until you reach the saddle between Schwarzkogel and Mallestiger Mittagskogel at 1730 m.
From now on, you descend towards the Mitzl-Moitzl Hut (trail no. 683) and the former customs hut. A few minutes’ walk below, you reach another spring. Continuing on the path, you rejoin a forest road and use either the forest trail or the forest road for the remainder of the descent back to the starting point.

After registering the day before (by 6 pm), a more comfortable arrival (Villach main station - Baumgartnerhof) is also possible using the Carinthia train shuttle.
Directions
From the A2 motorway exit Villach - Faaker See on the B84 towards Drobollach am Faaker See. In Drobollach turn towards Faak am See, follow the road Kohlstattstraße/Lakeshore State Road to Faak am See. After the tourism information center Faak am See, turn right towards Finkenstein and at the roundabout (Harley Davidson sculpture) take the third exit to Latschach. In Latschach shortly after entering the town turn right into Altfinkensteiner Straße and follow the road to Baumgartnerhof.
Parking
There are several parking spaces available at the Baumgartnerhof parking lot; alternatively, the "Burgarena Finkenstein" parking lot is also possible. This extends the walking time by about 30 minutes.
