On this mountain route, the focus is on experiencing glaciers and their remnants from retreat. During the descent, we walk through a typical, impressive, and seemingly untouched high valley with small moors, blocks of rock, and side arms of the main stream with clear water.

The Silvretta is a cross-border mountain range involving Austria and Switzerland. On the Austrian side, the border between the federal states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol runs east of the present Silvretta reservoir through the area. Most peaks lie at altitudes over 2500 meters. Therefore, you remain permanently above the tree line. The best known is Piz Buin at 3255 m. It is the highest peak in Vorarlberg. Between 1925 and 1930, the Illwerke built the Vermunt reservoir, located somewhat lower toward Partenen. During World War II, the Silvretta reservoir was then tackled. Since 1954, Partenen in Montafon and Galtür in the Paznaun Valley have been connected by the Silvretta High Alpine Road. This road is about 25 km long. Thanks to this construction work, we can now conveniently reach Bielerhöhe, the highest point of the Alpine Road, by car. However, this connection is closed from November to May. On the Silvretta reservoir, the only ship traffic in Europe above 2000 m altitude operates.

From the Madlener Haus, we follow the signposts to the Saarbrücker Hut and after a few minutes cross through sparse dwarf pine growth, the former riverbed of the Ill. From time to time, individual bushes also line the path. At the next fork, we slowly ascend southwest toward the Tschifernella. On the ridge, the path goes steadily up and down through scree, rocks, and pasture areas with numerous cows. On the other side, we cross a stream and find ourselves in the middle of the scree slopes around the Saarbrücker Hut. A few meters below the hut, we turn east and climb through the scree landscape below the retreating glaciers to the Litzner Saddle. Now we have reached the highest point of this route. After a well-deserved break, we follow the path west down into the Klostertal. Just below the saddle, we pass a small lake. The landscape slowly becomes green again. The last meters to the valley floor of the Klostertal consist of steeper grassy slopes, which we overcome in small serpentines. There is even a short wire rope-secured passage awaiting us. We leave the Verhupftal and walk down the valley on the left side of the Klostertal stream. The further path to the Silvretta reservoir is in the marshy and rocky terrain partly sparsely marked and difficult to recognize. However, there are many alternatives. Over a terrain edge, we finally reach the reservoir circular path and follow it over to the western dam. After a few more minutes of descent, the Madlener Haus is reached again.
