Obzova is the highest mountain on the holiday island of Krk (Croatia). The flat, spacious summit lies on a karstified high plateau in the southern part of the island. At the highest point there is a pile of stones and a rock plaque.

This is a combined bike and mountain tour. The starting point is the large roundabout between the towns of KRK and PUNAT. The small chapel SVETI DUNATA is also located there.

You initially cycle up to the Prijevoj Treskavac Pass (315 m), then turn right to reach the Žičevo homestead.

Shortly before this, on a well-marked but very rocky path, you ascend to Veli Vrh (541 m), Brestovica (558 m), and Obzova.

Descent on the second path, which leads rightwards downhill past the summited peaks to the bike depot and on a known route into the valley.

    Author’s recommendation

The town of Krk is always worth a visit. Punat also has its charm.

You should not miss visiting the small church of Sveti Dunata at the starting point.

    Safety information

During the holiday months of July and August, the island of Krk is extremely crowded. The ascent to Prijevoj Treskavac Pass can be a test of patience at this time. Also, it can be very hot in midsummer. Water is nowhere to be found in the karst.

The descent route is not as well marked as the ascent path. Good orientation skills are necessary here. Cairns partly support the coloured markings.

In fog or bad weather, this tour is generally not recommended (orientation problems, unhindered storm exposure, etc.).

    Tips and suggestions

The spring and autumn months are ideal for this activity.

    Roadbook

First, you cycle on the wide asphalt road leading from the roundabout towards Baška, up to the Prijevoj Treskavac Pass (315 m). During the main swimming season, expect heavy car traffic here.

Now take the road turning right (partly gravel, partly asphalt) up to the gate before the Žičevo homestead. Bicycle depot here.

Then follow the red-white-red marked path to Veli Vrh (541 m), gently downhill to a pond, then slightly uphill to Brestovica (558 m) and in the same manner finally to Obzova (569 m). A pile of stones and a rock plaque confirm that we are on the highest mountain of the island.

Downhill to the bike depot on the path leading north towards Draga Bašćanska. CAUTION: At a junction, go straight ahead, always passing the previously climbed summit to the right (east) below, until you reach another junction with the ascent path and from there back to the deposited bike. Now descend to the Prijevoj Treskavac Pass and then speed down the wide pass road back to the starting point.

Of course, you can also descend on the ascent path (much easier orientation).

    Public transport

Traveling from German-speaking countries by public transport is definitely possible but time-consuming.

    Directions

The wide, heavily trafficked road D102 crosses the island of Krk. The starting point is directly on this main road at a large roundabout.

You can easily reach this by car from all directions. However, it is better (at least if you stay on Krk for several days) to travel directly with your bike from your accommodation.

    Parking

There is a limited number of parking spaces near the starting point.

    Equipment

One should not be deceived by the low height of the mountain. Mountain boots are highly recommended for the ascent. The sharp-edged karst rock requires good footwear. In summer, sun protection and a well-filled water bottle are also necessary.
