The mighty, solitary Peitlerkofel is the northwestern cornerstone of the Dolomites. Its north face majestically shows many difficult climbing routes. The normal route winds around the mountain and reaches a saddle on its southern side between the Small Peitlerkofel and the main summit. From there, a relatively short and not particularly difficult via ferrata leads to the main summit.

The Peitlerkofel is a striking Dolomite summit rising steeply into the sky in a fairytale setting. The ascent over the Peitlerscharte to the saddle between the Small and Great Peitlerkofel is a very beautiful, not particularly strenuous but long hike. The trail is very well marked and signposted. If the further way to the main summit seems too difficult, you can easily hike over to the Small Peitlerkofel, 2813 m. The ascent to the main summit proceeds over a well-secured via ferrata with new steel cables and anchors. Although the route is neither particularly steep nor especially difficult, absolute surefootedness and freedom from dizziness are prerequisites. Most climbers use the via ferrata without specific equipment, but I would recommend complete via ferrata gear to everyone! Rockfall is not uncommon due to many climbers, who also have to descend on the same route. The panorama from the summit of the Peitlerkofel is magnificent; the main Alpine ridge is within reach; to the north, you can see Großvenediger and Großglockner; to the west, the Ötztal Alps, the Ortler, and the Brenta group; to the south and east, the rest of the Dolomites. For the experienced climber, the ascent of this magnificent Dolomite summit is definitely a must!

On the way back, you should definitely stop at one of the nice alpine huts just above Würzjoch. Both huts are located very close to the path, are well managed, and lie directly beneath the impressive north face of the mountain!

In case of thunderstorm risk, the exposed ascent on the upper part to the free-standing summit must absolutely be avoided!Roadbook
At Würzjoch, the path to Peitlerkofel is signposted. You hike over beautiful alpine meadows and follow trail numbers 8A and 4 to the Peitlerscharte, 2405 m. There you will again find signposts. Trail number 4B leads in many switchbacks and not too steeply up to the saddle between the Great and Small Peitlerkofel. From there, you can clearly see the remaining route to the main summit, which is secured with steel cables. Follow the steel cables (A) to the right to a steep rise (B). Then simply continue (A) until the protections end just below the summit. A narrow path leads over scree upwards to the summit cross. You descend by the same route to the starting point.

Equipment
Complete mountain equipment with good mountain boots (light trekking shoes), rain protection, bivouac sack, etc. For the less experienced climber, complete via ferrata equipment is definitely recommended! A helmet is a must for the ascent of this summit.Localization
