Quiet, beautiful mountain route along mountain meadows, alpine pastures, and high pastures to the Muttenkopf, with a great view of the Wipptal and the Stubai mountain world

From the parking lot at the end of the Obernberg valley, a forest road initially leads upwards through larch forests past mountain meadows to the "Kastnerbergalm." Upon reaching the alpine pasture at 1800m, the forests gradually give way to grazed areas, through which a beautiful path winds up towards the Muttenjoch. Wide alpine pastures repeatedly appear, giving the landscape an open and inviting character. Accompanied by reverent amazement, the high walls of the Tribulaun massif increasingly come into view and become the constant companion of the hiker during the route. It is not long before you reach the Muttenjoch, the crossing into the Gschnitztal. Only one last, but steep climb separates us from the wide summit plateau with its nicely situated cross. Whether the white glacier landscapes of the Stubai Alps, the bizarre rock pyramid of the Habicht, or a wide view over the Wipptal to the Karwendel mountains, the view at the top is truly magnificent and a more than worthwhile reward for the effort of the ascent.

The route to the Muttenkopf can also be wonderfully combined with a crossing into the Gschnitztal. For this, you simply take the descent from the Muttenjoch into the Martairalm.

First, from the parking lot, head northwest along a narrow asphalt road that leads to the last farms of the valley. After passing these, the asphalt gradually turns into gravel; shortly after, you reach a fork in the road. Here, turn left and follow the wide forest road No. 99A, which winds up the northern side of the valley. After several switchbacks and about 300 meters of elevation gain, you finally reach the Kastnerbergalm. Shortly behind the alpine pasture building, the path splits again; here, follow the cart track westwards. Shortly after, you reach a high pasture area beyond a small stream. The hiker is free here to either continue following the relatively flat cart track or take a short marked path No. 126 upwards and thus reach a more direct path uphill. Eventually, the paths rejoin, and the Muttenjoch is not far, which you reach after pleasant stretches over alpine pastures. The Muttenjoch marks the transition to the Gschnitztal, from where a path also joins accordingly. Now one last steep ascent along the ridge in a westerly direction remains before finally reaching the cross of the Muttenkopf and a magnificent view of the surrounding mountain beauties opens up.
