The Heindlbodensteig connects the Stodertal with the Brunnental and runs through the gorge of the Weißenbach. It goes with frequent ups and downs on a narrow exposed path mostly high above the stream bed through the gorge.
Author’s recommendation
The problem of this route lies less in actual climbing difficulties (partly secured, A), but in the fact that careful steps are required on the narrow path, as a fall due to slipping would be fatal!

Safety information
The Heindlbodensteig is more demanding than some easy hiking peaks. Absolute surefootedness on the narrow and often slippery path is a prerequisite. Slipping on the often very steep grassy slopes would have serious consequences. Moreover, it is very doubtful whether mobile phone reception can be expected in case of an emergency in the gorge.
Tips and suggestions
Anyone who has completed the Heindlbodensteig faces the question of how to return to the starting point.1.) One car each at the start and end points (practical, but no longer recommended in times of "climate change", etc.)
2.) Park the car at the Bernerau parking lot and cycle across to the Stodertal (easily doable, recommended)
3.) Leave the car in the garage and take the train to Hinterstoder station. From there it is about 3 km to the starting point. At the end of the route you still have to walk downstream to Steyrling station to start your journey home from there. A total of 22 km walking distance. The best of the three options!
Roadbook
We start the route at a small parking lot (by a bridge), about 1.6 km from the beginning of the Stodertal, where the Weißenbach flows into the Steyr.
A yellow sign already warns here about the dangers of the Heindlbodensteig. You immediately climb a very steep forest slope, which soon leads to a forest road.
Now on the road, first slightly descending, then ascending, always to the right of the stream bed up to a valley flattening ("Heindlboden"). Here we leave the forest road and initially hike easily along the stream uphill.
Then it gets serious: the terrain becomes steeper, the narrow path mostly runs high above the deeply cut stream bed with frequent ups and downs. The most difficult sections are secured with (thin) steel cables, a ladder also helps over a steep step, and about halfway through the gorge you descend to the stream bed.
The bridge that was once here is destroyed. You cross the stream and later once again and reach the route logbook from 2005 (still not fully filled in November 2021!).
Here the main difficulties are over. The path leads up a forest slope on the right, then through a clearing and you enter an old-growth forest. Very scenic, you finally reach a forest road.
From here downhill to an alpine pasture and on to the wide stream bed of the Hungeraubach. Continuing right, past a monument and a dam, you reach a large junction before Bernerau on a leisurely hike.

Directions
The most convenient approach is via the Pyhrn motorway from the north or south to the Hinterstoder exit. Then follow the signs to the nearby junction to Hinterstoder. On the Stodertal road, however, only about 1.6 km upstream to the small parking lot at the starting point.Parking
