Mount Miaron is a small peak on the Cadore/Friuli border, above the Mauria Pass; it looks simple on the map but is actually quite challenging. It’s not very well-visited, but it’s well worth the climb.

Mount Miaron is never mentioned in the various hiking guidebooks, yet it has its own charm. I’ve included it as a mountaineering route because, while it looks quite simple on the map, you actually have to navigate a unstable and strenuous scree gully, you have to climb a short Grade II wall, ascend the steep secondary summit with careful Grade I+ climbing, and, finally, navigate an exposed ledge where caution is required! Nothing overly technical, but you need to be an experienced hiker to tackle this route. Start from Passo Mauria, climb up the former military road to the fort, then locate the trail among the mountain pines, head up the gully, and follow the trail.

    Author’s recommendation

The hike up to the fort can be done comfortably even in winter when there is snow

    Safety information

To climb up or down the gully, I recommend staying as far to the right as possible (on the ascent), using the rock on the side to help you steady yourself and walk.

    Tips and suggestions

When you're climbing up or down the gully, it's easy to dislodge quite a few rocks—even large ones—but you should try to avoid doing so, because there might be someone else climbing up, even from a distance, who could get hit!
