Author’s recommendation
A visit to Parco Naturale Monte Tezio should definitely be combined with a climb of the peak giving the park its name.
Neither the Belvedere viewpoint nor the continuation marked with cairns are shown on the Kompass map. However, both can be easily found on site.

From the parking lot, follow the paved road uphill between the holiday homes to the barrier, behind which is an information board about the hiking options in the Parco Naturale Monte Tezio. Continue on the wide forest road, passing the junction of Sentiero Nr. 2 to a stone-built house of the “Communità Montana, associazione dei Communi Trasimeno Medio Tevere”. Here you will find numerous information signs again. Follow Sentiero Nr. 4 Belvedere – Romitorio or the sign “Esemplare di lupo appenninico”, where after 230 m you reach a spot where, if you are “lucky”, you may see a rare specimen of the Apennine wolf. Behind the double wire mesh fence he stands sadly and listlessly – truly pitiful, although in the wild you probably wouldn’t want to meet him! Continue following the “Belvedere” signs, staying always on the wide path, cross a ditch and gradually leave the forest to reach more open terrain with beautiful views. At the highest point of the path is the viewpoint “Belvedere” with an information board and a rest bench. A few meters down the path to the east is a faint branch of a small path (cairn, faded red-white marking). This leads through the forest (cairn marking) almost level along the eastern slope of Monte Tezino to the ridge over which the ascent from Migiana di Monte Tezio comes up. Finally, across meadow slopes to the wide ridge (nice view down to Castel Procoio) and together with the marked hiking trail up to Monte Tezino, 932 m, on whose summit there is a transmission facility. A few minutes north below the summit area is a cross on the east side (according to the inscription Croce di Fontenova). On a dirt track you walk down into the wide meadow saddle in front of Monte Tezio and ascend from the saddle at a poorly visible junction marked by a cairn up to Monte Tezio. The summit itself is restricted access due to archaeological excavations. The view is as extensive as from Monte Tezino. On the meadow ridge running northwest stands a large cross, marking the next target point. Passing a seismological measuring station, you walk on the ridge scattered with individual rocks and groups of bushes to Croce della Pieve. Very beautiful view from the cross, which stands on the edge of a steep rocky slope. You can go a little further to the highest point of the ridge (952 m).
DESCENT:
From the cross go back a few meters on the previous ascent. Here you can leave the ridge on Sentiero 3 / Parete Bellucci. Or you walk past the tree-covered rock cleft and first descend from the next hollow at the signpost “Sentiero 3”. Both paths meet again at the beginning of the coniferous forest. Descend on a nice path through the forest, consisting of many different coniferous trees. Soon you will meet the stone house again on the wide forest road, which you follow back to the parking lot.
Public transport
The starting point in the nature park is not accessible by public transport.Directions
Coming from Florence on the A 1 (Florence – Rome motorway) to the exit for the toll-free SS 75 towards Perugia and continue on this road to the Mantignana exit just before Perugia. From Perugia on the SS 75 towards Florence to the Corciano exit or a little further to the Mantignana exit. From both exits you reach Colle Umbertide, which lies on the road towards Umbertide. At the roundabout after bypassing the town of Mantignana, take the right turn towards Perugia and after the bridge over the Fiume Caina immediately turn left to Colle Umberto and follow the signs to Monte Tezio Nature Park. Via Compresso the narrow paved road goes up to the large parking lot at the entrance of the nature park. You could drive a few hundred meters further and park along the road before the barrier, but there is a general parking ban (although locals park there, saving five minutes).
If you come from the north via the E 45, the connection Umbertide – Perugia, you turn off at the Pierantonio exit and drive via Pantano – Maestrella to Colle Umberto or Compresso.
