The Passo di San Marco has connected the Bergamo region in the south with the Valtellina in the north for centuries. This mountain route around Monte Ponteranica starts at the pass. The first half of the route mostly follows the Sentiero delle Orobie Occidentale. We hike to the picturesque mountain lakes below the massif, climb the Ponteranica west summit, and enjoy the magnificent view over the Bergamasque Alps along the way. On partly steep, mostly deserted mountain paths we circle the massif. Passing the Lago di Pescegallo reservoir, we reach Passo di Verrobbio, where traces of old trench lines from World War I can still be found. However, there was never any fighting here. To end the long hike, we cross Monte Verrobbio – a beautiful, partly steep ridge hike with fantastic panoramic views.
