CAI Dolomiti Bellunesi
Route that allows you to reach the west summit of Monte Coppolo (San Donato Peak, 2069 m) from the locality Le Ej of Lamòn.
The route takes place entirely on the CAI 821 trail and along part of its development follows the Memory Path, so called because of the presence of various signs that call attention to the futility of war and the cruelty of men; a small detour also allows us to visit the monument dedicated to Josef Kiss (the "Knight of the Sky", see notes). The wonderful views from the summit span 360° from the Grappa Group to the Lagorai Chain, from the Vette Feltrine to the Pale di San Martino.

In the stretch between the Mezzaluna and the west summit of Coppolo there are a couple of passages that require attention and familiarity with rocky and slippery terrain (some metal ropes help to overcome these). The additional presence of quite exposed sections makes this route suitable for experienced hikers.
Route to avoid in the presence of ice and snow.
Tips and suggestions
Josef Kiss had 113 combat missions, 19 victories, and had already been seriously wounded in an aerial duel over the skies of Valsugana when he took off for the last time from Pergine with his Phonjix D-II fighter and two other aviators. The three Austrian aircraft were intercepted by several Italian and British planes over Lamon and hit by numerous bursts of fire. Two managed to escape, Kiss faced alone six enemy planes and in the end his aircraft riddled with bullets crashed on a ridge of Monte Coppolo. His body was recovered and buried in full uniform in the military cemetery of Pergine. His fiancée, a woman from Pergine, never married and went to his grave every day bringing fresh flowers for fifty-two years until her death. Even the enemies honored the memory of the "Knight of the Sky", who always avoided shooting a downed pilot coldly and treated imprisoned enemies with respect, flying over Pergine with a squadron of planes and dropping a commemorative wreath as a "final tribute to our brave adversary". Those were different times, "dueling" was practiced in the skies just as knights had fought duels on horseback not long before, but it was always about war and death.

Roadbook
From the locality Le Ej we follow the signs for the CAI 821 trail which, initially on wooded terrain and then progressively on stony ground, allows us to reach the rocky area of the Ciaie del Taiòl.
The first views of the Vette Feltrine and the Grappa massif begin to appear, while the trail takes us near the monument dedicated to the Hungarian pilot Josef Kiss (path that starts to the right of the trail at an altitude of 1730 m), a pilot of the aviation of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire who was shot down in this area on May 24, 1918.
At an altitude of 1780 m we come across a fork: to the left continues the CAI 821 trail leading to the summit of Coppolo, to the right instead the CAI 822 trail which follows the Gramolir Path and heads towards the Brocòn Pass.
Once on the 821 trail that branches off to the left, we quickly gain about a hundred meters in altitude to then turn left and start a stretch of about 1 km very panoramic under the southern rock cliffs of the Coppolo ridge, with breathtaking views of the Venetian Prealps and the Grappa Group.
Carefully staying on the CAI trail we thus reach the Mezzaluna (a wide saddle that divides the western part from the eastern part of the Coppolo ridge) from where the view also opens up to the Lagorai Chain and little by little to the Pale di San Martino.
The stretch from the Mezzaluna to the summit of San Donato of Monte Coppolo is more rugged than the one covered so far and has a couple of passages where it may be necessary to use your hands (presence of metal ropes). Little by little the trail approaches the summit which now becomes visible and is quite easily reachable.
The view from the Coppolo summit is 360° and represents the best reward for the effort made to reach it.
The descent takes place along the same route as the ascent.
