This itinerary touches upon the most panoramic spots of the Tione di Trento area, namely Malga Cengledino, that looks out onto the Brenta Group, on the Busa di Tione and Monte Cengledino. Thanks to its central position, Monte Cengledino allows visitors a wide angle view from Val Rendena in the north to Bleggio – Lomaso in the east and to the upper Valle del Chiese in the south.
The only unsightly view is that caused by the signal repeaters located close to the crucifix at the summit. With a bit of maneuvering you can still take nice pictures of the crucifix, however.
Starting from the parking lot in Zeller, the route follows the uphill road toward Malga Cengledino, overlooking the Brenta group. The trail crosses a dense coniferous forest, partly avoiding the paved road, and reaches the meadows below the Malga. Skirting the meadow, it reaches the Malga and then a clearing, which in the summer can be used as a parking lot for easier access. From here, it continues to Piana di San Martino, a verdant basin with blooming rhododendrons in spring. The uphill trail, with a few zig-zagging stretches, leads to Cima Cengledino, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Mountains, the Valle del Chiese, the surrounding villages and the peaks of the Adamello mountain range that dominate the Val di Breguzzo.
Author’s recommendation
Remember to bring a camera or your smartphone, to capture the picture-perfect views. In summer, when the Malga is open, you can shorten the route by parking above Malga Cengledino, even without a town permit. In the other periods of the year, it is forbidden to drive on the asphalted stretch from Zeller to the Malga.

Tips and suggestions
Avoid the route in the late summer mornings, as the sun is right perpendicular to the trail. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, the track becomes a pleasant diversion from routine.
Roadbook
Climb up along the tarmac road that enters the forest, ascending with a few bends in the direction of Malga Cengledino.
At the first bend on the right, leave the road and keep on going straight, following the SAT red/white signs. Trail No. 225 crosses over the road repeatedly.
You will enter the meadow of the mountain dairy at about 1590 m .
Cross the whole meadow to the car park above Malga Cengledino (1678 m – bench and SAT sign). On this section the trail and the signs are not always fully visible. When in doubt, follow the road.
At the sign posted at an altitude of 1678 m, climb into the meadow up above the car park. Sat signpost No. 225 (indications for Valbona lakes).
When you have reached the highest point of the meadow, the trail climbs for a last short stretch in the forest and then with a long traverse route crosses over a few hollows.
Once you are in Pian de San Martin locality (1870 m), a meadow located at the bottom of the northern slope that climbs up to the summit, now visible thanks to the large antennas, you will find the crossroads for the peak (sign, trail No. 235A). Leave the SAT trail No. 225 and start ascending to the left. A short distance further, along trail No. 225, there is a bench and a picture depicting St. Martin.
Climb up the entire north side, along various bends, until you reach the western crest (sign) and walk for the last few metres to the crucifix on the summit of Monte Cengledino (2137 m).
Trace your steps back down to the departure point.
