Rifugio Menaggio: http://rifugiomenaggio.eu/Roadbook
We start from the large parking lot in Breglia. The passable paved road to Monte di Breglia can be left to the left after the first hairpin bend. We follow the markings (mountain marathon route) on a wide root path, soon rejoin the paved road and follow it for 200 meters. The following curve is shortened on the left past houses across a meadow. After crossing the road, we again shorten the next hairpin bends through the forest past holiday homes. We briefly follow the road, then left on a paved path steeply past holiday homes into the forest. A craggy-rooted-earthy wide path leads up to the parking lot of Rifugio Menaggio (also accessible by car via the mountain road). On a wide, wooded ridge, we ascend in several hairpin bends on a well-developed hiking trail with some small craggy steps to a fork in the path. If you follow the left path, you reach the already visible Rifugio Menaggio in a slightly ascending long traverse over the Sentiero alto. But we choose the path to Monte Bregagno and walk past a meadow (with a small radio tower) into the steep east flank. After a short craggy step, we cross up a steep mountain meadow to the saddle with the chapel Santo Amate. We follow the trail tracks northwards on the broad, treeless ridge. Soon we reach the beginning of the broad and moderately steep south ridge of the Begagnino. This is climbed quite directly on a slightly eroded path. A short left bend leads to a craggy ridge back, which leads flatly to the summit of Bregagnino with a cairn. We flatly walk down the broad north ridge over an intermediate hill. In the wide saddle, we cross an alpine road and head to the broad south flank of Monte Bregagno. In a shallow right bend, we bypass a craggy steep step and ascend in the east flank to a large cairn. Here we turn left and walk along wide erosion paths up to the visible summit mark on the plateau of Monte Bregagno. Beautiful summit cross, fantastic panorama.
Descent to Santo Amate along the ascent route. We continue southwards along the ridge over a hill into the notch Forcoletta at the foot of the northeast ridge of Monte Grona. This can also be climbed, slightly more alpine, in half an hour (see there). Our path now leads left at the foot of the rocks in a steep left bend somewhat exposed onto a vegetated scree slope. In short hairpin bends, the slope is descended quite directly. We reach a connecting path from Santo Amate to Rifugio Menaggio and follow it briefly down to the mountain hut. For the descent, we choose the Sentiero basso. First, it leads in hairpin bends along the material cable car down a steep ridge, then crosses a cirque in the forest. Shortly after the stream gorge, the path widens, a flat farm road brings us to the parking lot Monti di Breglia. Now back along the descent path to the starting point.
