The partially dilapidated gun turrets on the summit of Mont Chaberton testify to a martial past. The Fort du Mont Chaberton was already built during World War I as a border defense installation, at that time the summit still belonged to Italy. In World War II, Italians and French fought fierce battles there, during which the fort was partially destroyed. After the war, the mountain was ceded to France. Today, there is no trace of the conflict between the two countries; on fine weather days, many hikers from both France and Italy trek up to this excellent viewpoint summit. The military path arranged in gentle switchbacks makes the ascent possible for almost everyone. Until a few years ago, it was even possible to drive up from Fenils (IT) with off-road vehicles. Today, due to the poor condition after a landslide, hiking this path is discouraged. The via ferrata (C/D), which would lead from Claviere to the summit, is unfortunately closed due to maintenance work (status 08/2020).
