The Messner Mountain Museum Dolomites is of course, besides the (rather insignificant) summit, the main goal of this mountain tour. Via the serpentined old military road or the hiking trail 479 you reach the museum on the summit of Monte Rite in about 2 hours.

    Author’s recommendation

The Messner Mountain Museum Dolomites can also be conveniently reached by shuttle bus from Passo Cibiana via the military road.

Dining opportunity at the Rifugio Dolomites just below the museum or summit.

    Roadbook

From the Rifugio Remauro, the closed mountain road to Monte Rite begins northwestwards. This road is followed for about 1km to the first hairpin bend. Here, you leave the road to the left. A good, moderately ascending hiking trail (a bit muddy, therefore slippery when wet) first leads westwards through dense forest, then rises higher northwards in two bends. A wide but steep grassy gully is overcome in short switchbacks before the mountain road near the west ridge is reached again. A few hundred meters up the road eastwards, it can be left again to the left. The flat summit ridge is reached via the moderately steep western ridge. Over the museum roof, the highest point of Monte Rite (with information board) can be reached 100 meters east of it. However, the main goal here is not so much the summit but Reinhold Messner's Mountain Museum Dolomites in the former World War I fort. The climbing history of the Dolomites is presented with historical climbing tools and landscape paintings by well-known artists.

Descent along the ascent route or via the gravel path (old military road) down to Passo Cibiana in several long switchbacks.
