There are several 3,000-meter peaks in the Martell Valley. One of them is the Lyfispitze / Lyfispitz. The trail winds through the long, narrow Lyfi Valley without any difficulty up to the Lyfiknott. There, the scenery changes, and you enter the barren terrain of the Schafalm. After a steep section, you reach a hollow with a mountain lake that splits into two after prolonged dry spells. From here on, the terrain becomes quite alpine. The final 350 meters of elevation gain take you up the southwest flank—and higher up, the south flank—to the panoramic summit. This section is steep to very steep and somewhat arduous to navigate due to the boulder-strewn terrain. However, if you stick to the trail marks—which are usually clearly visible—the climb goes more smoothly than you might expect from below when looking up at the boulder-strewn wilderness. The interestingly designed summit cross has likely contributed to the summit receiving regular visitors since the cross was erected in 2015.

Roadbook
From the parking lot or bus stop, take Trail No. 10 up to the Lyfialm. The trail, which is mostly a gentle climb, first takes you through the mountain forest and then, higher up, across pastures to the alpine pasture. The path continues right through the outdoor dining area, where the menus on display are sure to make your mouth water. Follow the Lyfibach stream along a steep but wide cart path to the tree line, which you’ll soon reach. You’ll now have the long Lyfi Valley stretching out before you, with the Lyfispitze still far off in the background. After the turnoff to the Pederköpfl, a short, somewhat steeper section follows. The trail runs along the very flat valley floor, partly across wet meadows, to the first longer steep ascent below the Lyfiknott, which visually divides the valley in two. The trail gradually begins to climb more steeply and, in a wide arc, crosses over to the left side of the valley. The path flattens out again as you continue to the next steep section. After another flat stretch, the trail ascends along the west side of the Lyfiknott into a wide saddle. From here, you can reach the Lyfiknott (2,852 m), which juts out to the south, in a few minutes by heading right over easy-to-navigate rock slabs. The well-marked trail leads northward across flat scree slopes to the next, steeper ascent. In the subsequent depression, the mountain lake lies to the left, though it is not yet visible. At the base of a crumbly rock face, the trail is initially flat until it reaches the start of a field of large boulders. After crossing this field, you’ll find yourself at the start of the steep southwest flank. Climb steeply upward on a sandy trail, then continue zigzagging across the boulder slope, with the trail markers and mostly clearly visible trail tracks guiding the way. Finally, you reach the southern flank, which is only slightly flatter for a short distance, before the ascent becomes steep again and, in places, quite arduous as you climb the boulder slope. After a somewhat confusing stretch, you reach the memorial cross for the Kuhleitenwirt. From there, it’s not much further to the highest point with its distinctive summit cross. On clear days, the impressive panoramic view makes the effort of the ascent well worth it.
The descent follows the same route.
