There are several routes up the Großer Laugen. One of them is a real challenge: the extremely steep "Direttissima" with countless steps over the Laugensee and the subsequent "crossing" of the summit are a rewarding, albeit strenuous, alternative to the much-travelled normal route.
The starting point of the tour is, as for most other approaches, the Gampenpass. First we follow the forest road for five minutes in the direction of the Laugenalm. Immediately after the first left-hand bend, turn right, following the signs for Laugensee/Bonacossaweg no. 133. Caution: The narrow „entrance“ is often üoverlooked. From now on it is a case of lifting your knees, because the first part of the ascent requires mountain climbing in the truest sense of the word. Over steps and roots, stones and now and then über a short breather passage we climb up to the tree line. From there on, the steps become fewer and the wonderful view makes you forget the effort. Having reached the beautifully situated Laugensee (2182 m), we can decide whether to make a short detour to the right up to the summit cross of the Kleiner Laugen (about ten minutes with a magnificent view down into the Etschtal) or to tackle the last stage straight away.
