On this route, starting from Lienz, we first primarily cross the Lienzer Dolomites from north to south, then cross the Gailtal and proceed to the Karnischer Hauptkamm, along which we travel eastwards up to the Plöckenpass.
The paths run south and north of the main ridge. Since the border also runs along the ridge, we sometimes descend briefly into Italy. One night will be spent in the Gailtal in the village of Sankt Lorenzen. On the route, we visit four huts and one hotel: in the Lienzer Dolomites these are the Karlsbader Hut and the Kerschbaumeralm Shelter, in the Karnischer Hauptkamm these are the Gasthof Zur Post, the Hochweißsteinhaus, and the Wolayersee Hut.
The Karnischer Hauptkamm is also not very high. At the passes, we will hardly find any snow. The only large permanent snowfield lies near the Valentin Törl. The transitions between huts vary greatly in length. Sometimes they are short, like between the Karlsbader Hut and the Kerschbaumeralm Shelter. We can then briefly make a backpack depot and take a peak. One hut transition is very long: that between the Hochweißsteinhaus and the Wolayersee Hut, at least seven hours walking time, including breaks thus easily eight or nine hours.

Public transport
Osttirol is difficult to reach by public transport. By train, the best route is via Munich, Salzburg, and Spittal an der Drau.Directions
By car from Kufstein via Kitzbühel and Mittersill through the Felbertauern Tunnel to Lienz. An alternative route goes via Salzburg, the Katschberg Tunnel, and Spittal an der Drau. Slightly longer, but mostly motorway.Parking
In the area around the train station; from here a bus goes to the Dolomiten Hut.Coordinates
