Tourismus Lenggries
The popular ski touring mountain is also one of the best-known mountain destinations in the Rißtal in summer and a local mountain of Lenggries. The Schafreuter is a true classic. When the weather forecast promises a stable high pressure for the weekend, around a hundred summit climbers sometimes meet around the summit cross. Most take the path via the Tölzer Hütte (1835m), 3 1/2 hours to the summit. Slightly longer but also more varied is the ascent via the idyllic Moosenalm and the north ridge. Here you have lots of views on the way up and on the promenade back to the Moosenalm. Added to this is the diverse Karwendel flora in early summer and the colorful panoramic view in autumn. In the shady Karwinkeln below the summit, you may, with some luck, also spot a few chamois.
The ascent from the Oswaldhütte to the Moosenalm begins with quite steep switchbacks along the forest road. From time to time, there are views into the Rißtal and towards the Soiernspitze. The path is well marked. Further uphill, follow the signpost "Schafreuter", going through the krummholz upwards to the Kälbereck (1757m). Here you get a first view down into the north-facing cirque (Kuhreiße) below the Schafreuter and out to the Sylvensteinsee. The summit cross also comes into view; one hour more, first along the pine-covered ridge, then over the wide grassy back to the highest point, the Schafreuter (2101m).
The descent proceeds through a rocky gully (problem areas with wire rope!). Then the path runs down the southeastern ridge to a "citizens' meeting" of a special kind. Lots of cairns. Magnificent backdrop! Right in front of you is the multi-summited Karwendel main ridge with the highest elevations of the range (Birkkarspitze, 2749m; Ödkarspitzen 2745m) and the most famous climbing walls (Laliderer). Possibility to stop for refreshments at the Tölzer Hütte (1835m).
The crossing via the west flank of the Schafreuter from the Tölzer Hütte to the Moosenalm offers plenty of views, with a small counter-climb at the back of the Wiesingberg. This is the right resting place for those who are not so keen on the hustle and bustle around the alpine refuge. Below the Kälbereck, the high-altitude and summit paths meet again. Past the Moosenalm, you descend on the ascent path into the Rißtal.
