Hike on an incredible ledge of almost 2 km, suspended more than 1 km above the valley and with a Dolomite “skyline” in the background no less impressive for beauty.

There is only one short narrow passage as wide as a footprint that “forces you to reckon” with the sense of depth; just above runs an equally short variant that could be bypassed at the “cat step”; I chose the one below because staying close to the rocks allows feeling the weight of the whole body well balanced on the feet.

At the north start (today’s) of the Cengia della Caccia you can arrive from below (directly from Rifugio Tre Scarperi) through the Passaggio della Caccia, or from above (as today) climbing the Lastron dei Scarperi.

It is clear that the south start is much easier to reach, but then the return is no longer relaxing.

Also in the north-south direction it is all a slight ascent and, in my opinion, a slight ascent is definitely better than a descent to hike a ledge of rock and scree.

Finally from north to south is the best view of the “skyline”.

Some photos are in vertical or panoramic format and do not display well in previews: switch to full view format to get a more complete idea of the environment of the hike.

From Val Campo di Dentro you can hike another long and very beautiful ledge, see the link to the itinerary → Cengia Severino Casara and Cengia Hans Dülfer from Val Campo di Dentro.

This route was walked on September 25th, 2018, and all observations and subsequent considerations fully apply only to that day.

    ↓

To climb the Lastron dei Scarperi you need to reach the Cadin di San Candido.

At the Forcella di San Candido, easily reachable both from Rifugio Tre Scarperi and Rifugio Locatelli, there is a sign pointing in the direction of the Selletta Bassa or Niederjoch (and from there to the Cadin di San Candido) reading “LASTRON DEI SCARPERI – DIFFICULT”.

Starting from Rifugio Locatelli, it is definitely shorter to go directly towards the Selletta Bassa.

Starting from Val Campo di Dentro as I did, you can go directly to the Cadin di San Candido by leaving CAI 105 and following a trail ascending the Grava del Rio San Candido or Innichbacher Graben: wild and solitary path, but not difficult, at least compared to what comes next.

    ↓

At Cadin di San Candido you arrive at a cairn that practically marks a three-way junction: ascent by the normal route to Lastron dei Scarperi, short final climb to Forcella Bassa, and beginning-end south of the Cengia della Caccia.

For the Lastron dei Scarperi (all marked with cairns) you enter a small gully with some rocks where you have to use your hands (possibly some single easy climbing sections), then take a traverse to the left that leads to the gentle final slope.

From the summit you have to go straight and descend along the north ridge to the Forcella del Lastron: here some attention is needed for exposure and some narrow steps; some small cairns guide at doubtful points looking for the best passage; you start right of the ridge line and pass to the left in the final part of the descent.

    ↓

From Forcella del Lastron you descend some meters on scree towards the Val Campo di Dentro side.

You pass under a small gully (which flows to the right) from where you could ascend to Punta Lavina Bianca: today I did not try because I had never been there and wanted to have time margin to recover any later orientation errors.

You begin to traverse the small scree amphitheater and some trail emerges, and also some cairns appear.

From here, basically, you follow a scree ledge that crosses various small saddles (always keeping the rock band to your right) until arriving at a last saddle where you notice below the characteristic Passaggio della Caccia: a beautiful pass between two towers overlooking a "cadin" with a flat base.

The descent to reach Passaggio della Caccia is quite steep, but the problem is not the slope: it is the very hard ground covered by a loosely settled layer of scree, gravel, and actual stones; there are some traces but no continuous and optimal line, you have to go slowly and be careful.

From the amphitheater of Cadin della Caccia begins the ledge.

    ↓

For the Cengia della Caccia (or Cengia del Passaggio della Caccia) no explanations are needed, it is a mandatory route and... the published photos are enough. 😉

    Public transport

    Public-transport-friendly

Val Campo di Dentro (or Innerfeldtal) is connected by shuttle bus, but you need to check if the schedules are compatible – based also on your own strength and abilities – with the day hike.

    Directions

You need to go to Val Campo di Dentro (or Innerfeldtal) between Sesto and San Candido and continue to one of the two parking lots, initial or end-advanced.

The road to Val Campo di Dentro is closed to traffic with a barrier from 8:45 AM to 6:15 PM, and is served in this time frame by a shuttle bus up to the advanced parking.

To avoid walking the whole valley on foot (the excursion is already long enough by itself) you need to enter before 8:45 AM.

The segment with restricted timed transit is over 3.5 km with a considerable elevation gain, and starting before the barrier you will likely return to your car when the barrier is already reopened – so, in my opinion, it is better to enter early (to save a lot of unnecessary paved road) and do the tour planning to return to the advanced parking shortly before the private car transit reopens.

    Parking

Large end-advanced parking in Val Campo di Dentro (or Innerfeldtal) accessible by private car if passing the barrier of the first parking before 8:45 AM.
