Kühgund and Iseler crossing

The Iseler, located between Bad Hindelang and Schattwald, is particularly known as a viewpoint mountain. The ridge of the Iseler, together with the Kühgund group, forms the northern end of the Rauhhorn chain. However, the highest peak of the ridge is not the Iseler (1876 m) itself, but the Kühgundkopf with its 1907 m. From the mountain station of the Wannenjochbahn, we first hike a stretch on the “Smuggler's Trail” before ascending along the German-Austrian border over the Kühgundrücken to Kühgundspitze and Kühgundkopf. Although the trail runs on the gentler southeast side of the ridge, the route requires surefootedness and a head for heights. The most difficult passages during the Iseler crossing are secured with ropes. Throughout the entire route, we enjoy both impressive views down into the Ostrach valley, Retterschwanger and Tannheimer valleys, and impressive distant views over the Allgäu Alps with Hochvogel, Großer Daumen, Gaishorn, and Rauhhorn.
