In early summer or late autumn, the northern ascent to Kreuzspitze may require the use of crampons/ice screws.Roadbook
From the parking lot, it goes pleasantly flat for about 35 minutes to warm up until a clearing (wood storage area). At its end, in front of a large beech tree, the path turns right - without signposts or markings but with a clear trail. In gently sloping switchbacks, it leads to Kuchelberg service hut (1,597 m); here you have the last chance to refill drinking water on the route.
Without difficulty, it continues to the Kuchelberg ridge, which we follow directly to Kuchelbergkopf. Around the Kuchelbergspitz, the terrain at the ridge is somewhat exposed, and using your hands may be necessary. Alternatively, a trail a few meters lower offers an easier passage.
At the saddle at 1,941 m, the well-marked northern ridge of the Kreuzspitze starts, requiring use of hands and sure-footedness on the somewhat loose rock typical of the Ammergau Alps. Two short sections with chains are not a major challenge.
At about 2,120 m, you meet the normal route from the west and proceed over easy terrain in a few minutes to the summit.
The descent follows the normal route and requires some attention near the summit structure. For experienced mountaineers, there are scree gullies in Hochgrieskar for a fast descent down to 1,250 m; then back to the left to the normal route.
With the bike, it takes about 20 minutes all downhill back to the car, if it was left there. Otherwise, you can also hitch a ride.
