Krummbachstein from Payerbach via Eng
The ascent initially leads through beautiful forest and soon reaches a short secured but easy rock passage at the Mariensteig. Then it continues along the deep, almost gorge-like cut of the Eng, where you encounter a reconstruction and old remains of a wooden crane (previously used for timber transport). The Promischkagraben also offers initial views of impressive rock walls on both sides of the path and later leads through a friendly-bright forest until you reach a meadow: the Knofeleben with the Hallerhaus (Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben). Now follows the consistently steep, in the last heights rocky and partially exposed summit ascent to the Krummbachstein. Upon reaching the summit cross, the panorama impresses with views of Rax, Schneealpe, Veitsch, and of course the Schneeberg.
The summit is crossed, with the descent path towards the Alpenfreundehütte being easy to walk. The descent to the Alpeck is also easy and leads over gentle meadows slopes, then again through forest (storm damage – some lying trees must be circumvented). The following section in the Lackabodengraben resembles the ascent through Eng and Promischkagraben.

Safety information
In the summit area some rocky, exposed sections! Caution in wet, snow, and ice! There is also the possibility to bypass the summit on the right-hand side (also green marked) and then reach it within a few minutes from the Alpenfreundehaus on an easier and unexposed path.Roadbook
From Payerbacher Schneedörfl (~550 m) via the Mariensteig through the Eng, then to the left through the (yellow-marked) Promischkagraben to the Hallerhaus on the Knofeleben (1,250 m). If you go left past the Hallerhaus, you reach the green-marked path that leads to the summit of the Krummbachstein.
Descent on the opposite side to the Alpenfreundehaus, from there first continue along the green-marked path until it sharply turns left towards Klosterwappen, Edelweisshütte, etc. Instead, go right over a meadow on the sporadically yellow-marked path, always strictly eastward, first in the ravine, then keeping left up a ridge to two small huts, pass these on the right and from here descend until a clearly identifiable forest path is reached, which leads to Alpleck. From there continue over the red-marked hiking trail to the Lackabodengraben, descend this and finally the Mariensteig through the Eng back to the parking lot.
Public transport
From Vienna (or Wiener Neustadt) you can reach Payerbach-Reichenau very well by S-Bahn, which usually operates hourly.Directions
By car on the Semmering expressway (S6) to the Gloggnitz exit, then turn towards Gloggnitz and drive through the town area towards Payerbach-Reichenau, Rax. Pass Payerbach. Shortly before the town end of Reichenau near the Spar supermarket, turn right and follow the signs towards Schneedörfl. First over a bridge, then drive about one kilometer eastwards. After a somewhat steep section, a narrow dead-end street with red hiking trail signs branches off to the left. Take this. After a few hundred meters there is a parking area for about 10 cars on the left side of the street.Parking
There is a small free parking area directly on the hiking trail in Schneedörfl (somewhat difficult to find – see directions!).Coordinates
