In the middle section up to past the wooden stake, it is possible to descend very steeply into the Staudengraben.Roadbook
Go up the grassy slope on the right side of the Großer Wolfstal and find a path on the ridge to follow. This should be approached with some caution because steps to the left or right can lead to slipping on the grass. Soon you reach rocky terrain which you continue to follow upwards until you come to a rocky ridge section with a wooden stake. From there we descended to the right towards the Staudengraben, and to help with the steep descent and partly the crossing for our accompanying female hikers, we stretched a strong rope to safely proceed through the steep and slippery terrain. We then laboriously followed a path beneath the cliff faces to a clearly visible grassy gully where we climbed back up the ridge using path traces. From there the route continued somewhat exposed along the ridge upwards to a rock face of the Schlageck, which we bypassed on the right. A not very wide rock ledge led us upwards to the beginning of the forest. We followed the forest with meadow sections upwards by traces until this part ended in the dwarf pines. Anna weakened a bit and admitted she had nothing left to drink. After I gave her some of my drink supply, she soon recovered. After about 50 m through dwarf pine corridors, we reached a freshly cut forest road of the Wachthüttelkamm. This road led at the top into the marked path directed towards the Ottohaus. Now it was easy to get to the cable car station. Afterwards, we took the cable car down.
Some remarks: If continuing past the wooden stake on the rock is too difficult, from there you can descend carefully to the right into the Staudengraben. Path traces and partly game trails are present. In the Staudengraben you can follow a path up to the Wachthüttelkamm or descend the Staudengraben. At the lower part of the Staudengraben, there is a chain on a several-meter-high rock wall to hold onto while descending. Those who want to reach the already flatter upper part of the Großer Wolfstal keep left in the forest, just above the rock faces on a path through the dwarf pines. This path gently descends to the exit of Großer Wolfstal and may already be somewhat overgrown. I walked there about 5 years ago once and once by exiting the Großer Wolfstal over the rocky ledges to the right.
We had two cars, so we did not have to return via the water pipeline path.
